Mazda 3 or ford focus - get a sport trim and save yourself some cash.

She wants some quality and refinement over what she used to have so this might not be the best strategy

I asked about the 86 and she's said it would be coil but she doesn't want a 2 door.

Of course an Acura would be a nice step up. However a base model ILX(only Acura you're getting for your price range) isn't worth the extra cash over a Loaded Civic SI if you ask me.

The Ford options. Sure they look decent on paper when you see the specs. Then you get in it and drive the thing, and you're like, Wow! what a piece of fucking garbage. Sounds like you've already figured that one out for yourself. I'd buy a Chevy Cruze before either of the Fords.

Golf GTI. Nice looking car. Pretty good all around. But personally I just feel it's too expensive for what you get. Value wise it is just so damn hard to beat the Mazda and Honda. Plus the reliability of the Honda can't be ignored, especially if she is the type to drive a car for 15 years like her last one.
I think she would like the power of the civic si but the big problem is that it only comes in manual.
The 2.0L at 158hp and the 1.5 turbo at 174hp would both be a step up from her old car but nothing crazy.

The ILX has pretty much the same power as the civic SI but with an automatic.
The civic SI is listed at 31,737$ on their website.
The base ILX is 31,876$ as listed on their website. But the premium one is the one with a fair amount of nice options. Priced at 34,377$ On their website.

Well if the SI went up in price and the ILX came down in price. And she's looking for a slightly premium upgrade. You might have a winner with the ILX. In the luxury small car market I don't think you'll find anything else for within about 5k of that price. Bare minimum of a Lexus IS200t is just over 40k.

Another option if she's not dead set on new and budget is still important. Is to take over lease or finance on a 2015 SI sedan. More than a few available last time I looked outside Alberta. Interest rates are damn near zero. You get the old NA engine which is better in the long run. And still a huge step up from her last ride. Be a good bit cheaper than a brand new Acura. But hell you could do the same thing with a few year old ILX to save some cash too. Not like the have added anything to that car that matters in the last 2-3 years.

Does it have to be a brand new car or are used options okay?

I know personally, with my current financial situation, I would rather buy a more upscale car that is used than a brand new sort of upgraded but still on the economy side of things car.

But of course some people value buying a vehicle brand new. For me though, i would take any one of those over even the ILX premium
But the big difference between a right winger writing for a right wing media source, and left winger writing for a left wing source. Is that everything he wrote here is true and factual, not just somebodies opinion piece that is spinning vague facts to try and support their poorly thought out opinion.

    Agreed.

If I were in the market, I'd probably be looking at something like this...
