    Default Dangerous New Telephone Scam

The phone call comes in from your spouse's number and the caller ID shows your spouse's correct name and picture.

"This is the _____ police. I've got your husband in jail and he's been charged with funneling money through RBC to Saudi Arabia and other countries. I'm calling you from his phone as he is in our custody. My name is Jonathan and my badge number is ________. I am at 403-699-2500 extension 1300.
    Etc more details...
You need to pay $4,500 immediately to secure his bail. This is a serious crime. If you want to see him again you need to act now. Do not hang up. This is a serious issue for your family."

I've been seeing scammers falsely appearing to come from phone #'s similar to mine for years, but this is literally matching the number. Your spouse's name and picture show up on your call display even though, technically, the number has an extra 1 in the front. You likely wouldn't notice.

My coworker just had this happen to his wife and she freaked the fuck out. It's easy to say "duh" from simply reading this post about it, but if it happened to many of your significant others, I think you'd be surprised at how freaked out they get, let alone how close they come to pulling out a credit card.

Incidentally, that number they give us the correct number for the RCMP Proceeds of Crime Offices in Calgary. So, if you googled while still on the phone, you'd be more tempted to believe the scam.

I quickly googled and could not find references to a scam of this nature.

And also, the police/justice system would never ask for money over the phone... so don't be retarded and you'll be fine.

I'm sure this could get old people though.

Most likely, especially if they changed it to their favorite grandchild lol

    Sad but true.

New immigrants are also at risk. I've noticed many Canadians that have been here <10 years remain VERY afraid of police.

You mean between having sexual emergencies and complaining about the wifi? Or after they cross our borders illegally?

    ^I don't understand this English.
Are you a new immigrant struggling with the language?
