The AMD Athlon X2 255 was launched in July of 2010, so let's say that you bought the PC within 1 year of the launch... That computer is only roughly 6 years old. The one I would sell you is almost the same age. So I'm glad we've confirmed that buying another PC isn't necessarily the best solution.

It's still an HP, and it's still and AMD, so it's not exactly the cream of the crop to start with... But I think that a good overhaul may be just what the doctor ordered.

Firstly, I'd love to check the PC physically for damages, if there are any burst capacitors on the motherboard, faulty RAM module(s), failing HDD with bad sectors, etc... All could contribute to awful performance.

Using a Windows 7 license to install Windows 10 is perfectly legitimate (ever since build 1511). You should not need to shell out any money for licensing.

If everything with the PC is fine hardware-wise, a simple backup/format/re-install would cost you somewhere in the neighbourhood of $75-$125

You may also want to consider upgrading to an SSD. SSD's are AT LEAST 5x faster than normal hard drives, and even when installed in PC's that are old... It makes them feel brand new again.

So here's the full life story of it.

Bought from Costco approx 13 years ago.

Fixed at nexus computers on the north end around 9 years ago. Power supply replaced and he moved all the guts from the original mini tower to a full size tower with some fancy blue lights.

About 4 years ago it started acting up and my neighbor added some stuff, cleaned it all up and it was working fine. Which brings us to today.

Last night, I went through it and deleted (add/remove programs) a bunch of stuff I haven't used in years. I also googled how to make Windows 10 faster and followed a bunch of steps. I had a bunch of programs that were starting up with the computer.

As of last night it's considerably faster, so I'm picking up a new screen and keyboard mouse today.

Both the wife and I need this thing online yesterday, so once I have a few days free I'm gonna come drop it off to you.

What you think... 2 or 3 days down time?

    Depends upon my corporate workload.

But I've had a decent amount of free time the last 3 days.

I'd quote 1 day turnaround at this point.
