 but then I'm kinda biased. I don't think the 6 speed was available until 2002/2003 or so. The older 12V VR6 only put out about 174HP whereas the newer 24V is 201HP. Not sure what the torque numbers are, but its a VW, so there's lots of torque.
Reliability wise, the engines are solid. VW has had a few problems with coil packs. Not sure if the VR6s were affected by that, I know the 1.8T was though. Also, window regulators have had a habit of breaking and MAF/O2 sensors go from time to time. |

Honestly Sunil, with the problems that we've had with our Bug...I don't think I myself would ever go with a VW. It's a 2002 Special edition Snap Orange 1.8T, the tranny went at 22,000km, little bits in the interior are regularly falling off/malfunctioning, the hood and trunk releases don't work, the gauge cluster has gone 3 times(they most recently replaced it with white when it was supposed to be blue), and just this past week the engine went at 31,000km. Sure we may have gotten a lemon(and what a lemon at that), but from what I've heard talking to other VW owners, most of this is very common.
On the good side, I know that the VR6 is a much more proven engine. The Jetta and Golf don't get as many complaints as Bugs, and in the end it's all up to you.
Good Luck!

| I work at a independent vw shop and i would say that the Vw engines are very reliable with the exception of a few common problems. The problems that ChromeDragon encountered are not common on the Golf and jettas. For some reason the new beetles don't have the same quality as other vw's. |

| Can't go wrong with the 1.8T in my opinion its a much easier motor to mod and takes to boost like flys to SH*t!! :D |
