Car Shipping - Click HERE for Original Thread

mitsubitchy
hey, does anyone know how much car shipping is from lets say shipping from the US, like a price range because i might be getting a car next year and probably want to buy a car from the US and ship it here. :fingersx:

THEONE
Not an EVO I hope they won't beable to be registared untill there bumpers comply which is supposed to be this year? :(

mitsubitchy
Well its not gonna be an evo, i havent really made up my mind on what kind of car to get but ive been looking at newer supras and old nsx's. my friend would be so happy if i got an evo but too bad for him i dont want one :P

Nightstalker
If only I had the money

redbaron303
You should be under a grand... shouldn't be too bad from the US.

Why not look around here, you can find those cars w/ a reasonable tag from BC or Ontario....

mitsubitchy
I guess i can try to look for them here in canada, but does anyone have any suggestions on what car to pick?

and also dont want a too common car too

how much money u got

redbaron303
Check out London Motorcars in Vancouver, quite the selection...

I can help you import an exotic from Japan if that's something you're interested in.

Exotics are always nice: Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, TVR, ...

Jap toyz: Acura NSX, Mazda RX7 FD3S, Mitsubishi GTO (3000GTVR4), Nissan 300ZXTT, Nissan Skyline (soon enough), Nissan Silvia S13/180sx, Toyota Soarer, Lexus SC300/400... Honda S2000...

You can get the majority of these rides here in Canada. In places like Vancouver it seems that NSX's go for alot less than they do here in Edmonton.

Just take your time, shop around, and don't hop into the first one unless you know it's the one! :)

Well I should be able to have about 40-45,000 to spend. Should be enough to get quite a bit of selection

redbaron303
You could get a "beater" Ferrari... for something like $50k....

www.zrauto.com has exotics, and may be able to help and they're in calgary (and the Ferrari and such were suggestions before I knew budget)....

What about a nice BMW Z* Roadster?! I used Z3M or Z3.... Older E36 M3 if yo ucould find the right car at the right price.... old school E30 M3! :)

mitsubitchy
Well im sticking with the japanese imports so i guess that cut out most of the cars, not really into europeon cars too, and for sure hell not domestics.

I'd recommend talking to these guys. Hans Ulsrud was very helpful in helping me sort out buying my car from across the country. You could always just zip down there and pick up the 340HP S2000 they have for sale...

I know a guy who shipped a Firebird from Florida (You obviously won't be buying a car from any northern state).

It cost him ~1000 to get it to Montana, but it worked out cheaper to drive down and pick it up than ship it across (It was almost another grand he said). So I'd definetely get quotes first.

So this is gonna be your first car yet you have 45 grand to spend on it??

NCC-1701D
something to consider when buying a car from the states are the border fees and getting the car converted into canadian standards (eg daytime running lights)

another thing to consider is the cost of the car to maintain....
you mentioned NSX and Supra as possible cars....checked out the cost of repair for common problems and the cost of maintenence etc etc...

It cant be that surprising can it? my brother bought a TL type S as his first car and thats already about 40 something... he was 21. Oh ya.. i looked at 3000gts but their really expensive on repair costs and heard the transmission is crap so that car might be out of the list.

In other words he's probably a spoiled 15 year old kid who's gonna get a car bought for him when he's 16. Am i right? I'm 29 and have been either in school or working since i was 18 and all 3 of our vehicles (fiancee and i) aren't worth $40-45k, so yes it IS hard to believe that someone way younger than me can afford to spend 40-45k on a used car. I'd say you're in a very small group of people who can afford so much at a young age. And YES i am jealous, i won't try and hide it. :(

and no im not a 15 year old spoiled kid.... and yes partly my parents will be paying for some of it but ill still be paying about 30,000, its called having a pretty damn good job in the summers... i dont blame to be jealous though...

redbaron303
What's up w/ ppl's bad attitudes "His parents are paying for it, he's a spoiled brat."

I love it when people jump to conclusions right off the bat, and don't ask the questions first. So what if his parents are helping him buy a car?! Is it a big deal that his parents have extra moeny and are willing to put it towards his choosen transportation!?

My parents gave me their car to drive until I was 18 because they didn't want me owning my own car (something about them having tpower over me, although it never worked). So I drove a $45000.00 car as my first vehicle and drove it when I wanted and where I wanted?! It doesn't matter who paid for it, I'm driving it and that's what counts (hell they even put my name on bill of sale). When I bought my first car myself, I was out a couple hundred and my parents gave me that too, does that make me a spoiled brat?! Hell no! I appreciate everything my parents have ever done for me from helping me w/ cars to school, to room and board...

I think it's awesome when someone gets help on their first car, especially so they can have a nice car and not some beater they have to worry about breaking down all the time and costing them more money because it's all they could afford to start with! :)

mitsubitchy
B) its nice to see someone helping :P maybe in the future when i make the decision you can help me redbaron.. at least you understand that its ok to have parents support to pay for first car..

redbaron303
According to some we're just spoiled Brats.... Oh well.

mitsubitchy
You were right on the beater part though haha.. my parents dont want me to buy a cheap car... my brother initially wanted like a old MR2 but my parents stopped him cause its too old.

redbaron303
If you search around and find the right old car they can be great... but if you just buy something for the sake of having a car because it's in your budget, IMO that's a bad move (for cheaper beater type cars).... You could probably get a used Lexus IS300 also!

Transporter
well you know good for you two..too have money..like taht but you don't need to brag...about it...not everyone has it taht simple..and you were fortunate...it don't bother me till ppl that have it start to make big show about how much they can spend and how of little value it is to them when really it is not their own money to brag about!!!

p.s. good luck with your first car

redbaron303
It's easy enough for a post to go off topic (I should know). If someone hadn't started raggin on the guy because he has lots of money to spend on his first car and would have simply answered his question about getting a car, not questioning where he gets the money for the car... :)

CanadianR
Hey. i just wanted to know if my suspicions were correct, and guess what they were. Hey, it IS great that his parents want to give him money for a car, great for him that is. I guess i was a little out of line calling him spoiled, but i have seen so many threads, it seems, coming from kids asking "what should i buy?" whether it be an expensive car or exepnsive mods for that car they just got. It seems aome of these people want to flaunt the fact they have money. Mitsubitchy: why don't you tell everyone more information regarding what you're looking for, like, are you gonna have a winter car to drive as well, are you gonna want to modify it, are you gonna drag race it or auto-x it or road race it, or do you just wanna cruise around with it? We can't really give any advice based on no info. I'd be happy to give some advice to you with more info, even though i am STILL jealous of you.

Redbaron: yeah, having your parents help you buy your first car is fine, but wouldn't you say paying $40-45k for your first car (used no less) is a little excessive? I payed $23k for mine and it's FAR from a beater. For $5000 you can get a car that's not a beater and your parents wouldn't have to worry about it breaking down, so your argument about that is pretty moot. That argument might work on your parents, but it won't work on me. The guy is getting a car that is worth 50% more than the average price of a NEW car, can you see how some of us might get a little jealous when we read stuff like this. I guess you have to have lived on the other side of life to see what i mean. Some people on this board may NEVER own a car that's worth $45k in today's dollars, and he's getting a first car worth that, so of course people are gonna write in and bitch about it. Anyways, i've gotten way off topic in this thread and will post no more about my first comment.

mitsubitchy
Hmmm to answer that question, im looking for a all round car, driven in the winter and summer. People think im crazy when i say this but im willing to drive an nsx foresay in the winter, yes call me an idiot if you like but thats just me. Mods and stuff yea probably ill end up modding the car a little. Also to answer about racing it, dragging it, cruising etc. ill probably end up doing all that too. Hell i might get a cheaper car like 15,000 and just mod it to make it look good and fast.

JustinL
Any car can be driven in the winter. Make sure you get some good winter tires for it. Adjustable ride height may also be a great feature too if your car is really low. There might be some roads that will just be impassable. Make sure you have some money saved up for repairs, because with a sports car things will break.

Justin

redbaron303
My dad's friend collects import/domestic sports cars.... he drives his 1991 Red Acura NSX in the winter all the time :) He brought it up to Lake Louise one winter when we're all there... now tell me if you don't think that's the oddest thing, an NSX w/ ski's on it (like that Lotus from JamesBond).... ANd RAGE2 from beyond.ca, there's a video of him driving his crazy ass 944turbo in like two feet of snow on beyond.ca somewhere...

CanadianR - I'm not saying that all cars under $40k are bad. I've owned plenty of cars, and most of them aren't expensive and most of them are awesome cars.... I got stuck with a lemon once and wished I woudln't have bought it because it cost me more in repairs than the car was worth, it's because it was in my budget at the time and i wanted a cheap sports car.... I got it cheap, that's for sure :( If you're lucky enough to find a good, clean, reliable car for under $5000 then awesome, you've made a good buy and hopefully it works (just like my maxima or first Z).

SHIFT_AT_9000_RPMS
Yes, yes, I was spoiled, don't hate.

My parents bought my first car:

a 1974 Toyota Corolla for $250, yellow no less!!! I hated that thing!!

mitsubitchy
Anybody know the repair costs of a nsx, if its high or not. Its an exotic so.. maybe the repair costs are high.

2003specv
How come Redbaron went from a $45,000 car to a beat up old 300 and a Maxima with an APC muffler?

Good question

redbaron303
I had to stop driving the TL since there were some recent problems that have developed with it and I did not want to fix them (so that's where the Maxima came from). I dunno, maybe he'll fix the TL for me and I can drive it again problem free... I'm sure there's something w/ Calgary roads that's messed up the car...

I wanted to buy my own car (300zxt), I liked the idea of having my very own vehicle not being paid for by someone else... it gives me a sense of accomplishment to know that I saved up and bought the cars I drive for the time being :) Also it gives me an excuse to have a "summer" and winter vehicles... Sports cars are so much more fun than sedans, and my parents said I couldn't have a sports car unless I bought it..... so I did :)

(I kindly answered your lame ass question, not that it was any of your guys' business why I went from a TL paid for by my dad to my own car)

For sure, the repair costs will be very high for both parts and labour. Honda jacks up the price on parts for these cars, just like the s2000, and to a lesser extent the ITR, cause they assume you're rich and won't balk at the high prices. As well, an NSX is EXTREMELY expensive to modify. I love NSX's and they are very very well-built and the quality is, i hear, second to nothing in it's price range, but i wouldn't recommemnd getting one, only because the cost of maintaining it would be high and the cost for aftermarket parts is also high, plus i couldn't bear the thought of driving one in the winter, but that's me. If i was gonna get a year round car to drive around here i'd want something all-wheel drive, so it would be fun to drive in the winter as well as the summer. How about a new WRX? you'd still have 7-8 k left for mods after buying one, or for a couple thousand more than you're budgeting you could get an STi. The WRX has a ton of aftermarket stuff available and is easy to get alot more power out of and is a good all-around car that can be good at drag racing and auto-x alike, it's really a matter of whether you like the look of them or not.
