I have been calling around for prices and such and Im finding the range being around $550 to $800 for 4 tires. I really dont want to spend $800 if I dont have to. Here are some of the more reasonable tires I have found, anyone have experience with these in the winter?
Cooper Weathermaster (supposed to be a copy of the Blizzak) $658.90
Monarch Snowtracker $589.74
Hankook W400 $578.24
Kumho KW17 $593.64
All the big names like the Alpin, Ultragrip and the Blizzaks are all pushing the $800 mark |

Though $800/set of winter tires isn't cheap (though that's cheaper than summer performance) I think a good set of tires is extremely important.
What's going to make you stop when you most need to? TIRES.
Especially in winter...so I say take the hit and get some Blizzaks/Alpins
Your undented rims, not broken suspension & cheap insurance (imagine what it'd be like after you rear end some soccer mom) will thank you :) |

| Call a Firestone/Bridgestone place and look at Winterforce Tires. They are the replacement for the old Firestone Winterfire's. Very cheap and I actually preferred the Winterfires over Blizzacks on my last car. We just put a set of the Winterforces on my mom's car and my girlfriend's car. Very pleased with the new design as well. My old Winterfire's also had a better treadlife than my blizzacks. They are studdable if you want and great tires even if you don't stud them. BTW, the kumhos you mentioned are also studdable. |

Find really cheap studdable tires and get them studded. They will out perform any and all rubber winter tires. Speaking with Pat Richard a few months back(yes the Canadian WRC driver) he was telling us that the cars get more grip with studs on ice than they do with slicks on pavement. Higher cornering g's, better acceleration and way better braking. Granted you aren't going to be running as big of tire studs as they do, but you also don't have 700lb-ft of torque to play with.

I honestly dont' understand why people get winter tires... especially if they cost like 800 dollars... you can buy a great winter car for like 500 dollars lol

Well I finally made my choice
I went with Toyo Garit HT winter tires. They seem to be the best for my application. A little pricey but they are supposed to have good wear so they will last quite a few winters. Well only time will tell how they are. |

getting tires studded means using metal studs no?
aren't metal studs illegal cuz they'll rip up our already ripped up roads? |

Yeah and you will wear off the studs pretty fast as well, they are great for snow pack and ice, but lots of the time in winter your driving on pavement.

No they aren't illegal so long as they are under a certain length(1/2" I believe). Sure they wear down, but for $17 a tire it's not a big deal to throw new ones in next winter.

I bought a set of dunlop ds-1 grasphics last yr for 400 shipped. Not sure what they retail but I had a friend up at kaltire's corporate head office.
i love them but pavement they suck. snow and ice they are awesome. I've had blizzak's before and i even find that these are better in the snow. |
