I don't understand what's so appealing about East Side Mario's...but that's prbly just me.
These all have good food, atmosphere & prices for food quality unless stated otherwise
Pho Hoa & Tau Bay have good pho (service is subpar and atmosphere is poor because Viet gangsters are constantly staring at everyone like they think they're going to be shot)
Good Buddy for quick & decent Chinese (service is alright, atmosphere generally tends to be busy & hustle bustle)
Dynasty for dimsum (service isn't so good)
Yeoman's Steakhouse for primerib (price is a bit higher than most steakhouses but quality is unmatched)
Sawmill for primerib lunchs ($10 for 7/8oz!!!)
Original Joe's for chicken fingers (bar/restaurant atmosphere, smokey even in non-smoking area)
Joey Tomato's for shoestring fries & maple glaze salmon
Earl's for Cajun Blackened Chicken
Mirabelle's is pretty nice too (atmosphere is decent, price is high)
Yokozuna/Furosato/Shogun for Japanese (Yokozuna in Riverbend Square has horrible ventilation, you come out smelling like deepfriend human but the food is good) |

| I am a big fan of the Outback Steakhouse...very good food whenever I am there! |

Jack's Grill is good, I know a bunch of the cooks there as I went to school with them at NAIT.
The #1 restaurant in the city would have to be The Hardware Grill.
Last year, I would have given it to il Portico but after a turn of events, Hardware is now my number 1.
For chinese food, Wok King is on top for me.
For cheap fast food, the Garden Bakery and Restaurant. |

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Packrat Louies!! This place has by far the best steak I've ever tasted in my life. Supposedly everything else is amazing too, but I love the steak so much that I've had it all 3 times I've been there.
Anyone else ever go there?

P.S. Terry, I like East Side too, great for a cheap dinner. The Italian Wedding soup is f@cking awesome with fresh parmesan in it! |

Agreed. East Side Mario is crap: overpriced and poor food.
Yeoman's has the best salad bar in the city.
LaRonde is good for deserts. Plus the view is 180+ -_- |

| The places I frequent most often would be Four Rooms although it's more of a winter thing for me, $5 martinis and a cigar... The only food I've really had there are their tapas but they are all good. I like Original Joes for burgers and stuff like that, a lot of food for not a lot of money. Garage burger bar also has some kick ass burgers if you don't mind being served by gay people. That bagel place on Whyte is good for a snack too, I can't remember what it is called though. Used to be called "Bennys Bagels". |

Definitely Pho Hoa for viet noodles as well as the one across Lucky 97...Oriental Noodle House??
There is a really really good smalle eatery on Whyte Ave that i think everyone should try. It's called Da-De-O's and specializes in New Orleans style food. I highly recommend it. masterv gives it two thumbs up!  |

Yeah that place definitely is good for chillin out. I first went there last winter and I only really go to the lounge part of it usually. Fridays for cheap martinis and good live jazz are the best. |

jack,
I get the opportunity to go to the NAIT dining room pretty much every day I want because of working there on someone else's dime, so I have a bit of experience with it.
I think the food is extremely TASTY (In terms of the spices they use and such). You can easily taste why the food is ranked so highly by all the food critics. But I honestly would not pay any of MY money to go there - especially at dinner where it's $20/dish I think.
The portions they serve are not big - the bison ribs had maybe 4 small ribs. They were delicious, the most tender pieces of bison meat I have EVER tasted. The presentation was incredible. The service was amazing. But the serving size was not that large, which is the biggest turnoff for me.
Maybe because I'm more of a burger/fry and steak/potato guy I'm not a big fan of the dining room. I love going to Moxie's and for $10 get the "Xtreme Burger" with 2 patties and a shitload of fries because it tastes good and fills me up. But I walk away hungrier from the NAIT dining room than I do from my daily lunch @ NAIT (the clubhouse/fries at the main cafeteria is awesome for $5).
Again - if you want a CLASSY place to eat for $25-30/person for dinner and don't mind a smaller (Again, I've only been to their lunches/buffets) portion size it's definetely an experience. Hell, I'd recommend to try it once to support the students - I know A LOT of people who have taken me out for lunch say it is hands down the best place in the city for the price. |

Pizza - St. Albert Pizza! This place is great, they were robbed a couple years ago but before you could go in and check out all the signed stuff from bands and singers on the walls(the collection is growing again). The place is somewhat of an "industry secret" for when groups come into town. It has been left "open" till the wee hours of the morning to cater to the likes of the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Allanah Myles(I just remember seeing the shirt she signed, hehe) amongst many others. Plus their crust kicks some serious ass, fresh toppings, great homemade sauce! A little pricy, but sooooo worth it!

River City has gone under. When the new owners changed the name to the River City Sakura....it just cheapened the whole "fine dining" experience and no one went there anymore.
Unless it's been reopened as I have not driven past there in a while now, than all that I said above is null. |

They are undergoing some changes that I don't agree with. One thing being the new menu. To put it bluntly, it sucks. The cook's, server's and the GM all agree and the Chef just doesn't care anymore. I'm not going to bash the place, I am still loyal to them, it's just time the chef left or is given a good boot out the back door opening up room for some fresh new ideas, innovations, etc.
/end of rant. |

hehe, I wouldn't say that it's "always" delicious. I went through the program there and some nights...I didn't put my best foot forward, . We were all students after all. While I was there, the instructor was a goof. It's better now though, that instructor is now teaching a different class thankfully.
I second the brunch but on Friday's. It's a buffet. You have to make reservations in advance though, it's always packed. The buffet consists of a lot of fine dining methodsand food. It's not your Buffet Palace/Buffet World crap. |
|
|

Sorry, I meant Buffet on friday. don;t know why I put brunch.... oh well.
well, I have a few friends currently in culinary arts at Nait and my experiences there have always been good. but I geuss you'd have a better grip on the situation since you were actualyl there. haha. |

That's cool. I've been meeting a lot of people that want to be a cook all of a sudden. I hope it's not because of FoodTV. The life of a cook is nothing compared to what they show. Read "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain. He puts it near or close to reality.
The life of a cook is; hard work for little pay, little time off, sweaty greasy clothes.
I made little money, less than $15/hour. Worked from 10 am to midnight most days, got no overtime for it either and rarely a moment to sit down and take a break. When I would leave work, I felt disgusting from the previous 14 hours covered in grease and sweat. Because I chose the life of a cook, I'm extremely bitter around this time of the year. The X-mas season would come around and everyone would be getting time off, travelling visiting relatives/friend's. I would be stuck in the kitchen working my ass off while everyone else went and had a life.
To be in the industry, you gotta have the heart, dedication and the skills to keep your head up in a professional kitchen. I'm no longer in one, I had my reasons. One chef can turn things you love to do so sour that it just makes you pucker and lose all the heart you had in it go away.
The pros of the industry; I never knew what it was to be hungry, starving, or sober. :D |
