Reckless Driving... - Click HERE for Original Thread

bunch
So I am a university student and i drive to school. In order to save the $8 that it costs to park everyday, i choose to park at a friends house.

I come off of the whitemud, go down fox drive and turn left on Belgravia (i think thats what its called). Now everybody and their mother turn left at the light on 114th street (agian im pretty sure thats it). Since my friend lives on university (78th) ave and 109th strret, i choose to go straight through these lights and save myself 10 or 15 minutes. The easiest and quickest way for me to get to his place is to turn left on 72nd ave and go down to 78th ave. Any other route would probably require a u-turn or something (the streets in the area are kind of messed). There is a sign at this corner that says "no left turns between 7 and 9".

The other day, i was driving to school at about 8:45. I make the turn and what do i see - several police cars pulling people over for making this turn. Although i was is not following the sign, i'd like to point out that this is a very small intersection and the traffic at that time was virtually non-existent. "OK" i thought, this will be a minor violation. Then i get the ticket - $172!!!!

These cops were sitting at a minor intersection pulling over students, who are already struggling to make it, for making a safe left turn. I mean, who else lives in the area! Also, this fine is larger than the photo radar ticket that i recently got for speeding! Which is really more dangerous?

Needless to say, i have been fuming about this for several days. I have a few questions: does this carry demerits? do i have a case for a reduced fine in court? is there no other crime in this city?

I simply cannot afford for my insurance to increase any further and i am absolutely choked at this ticket. Does anyone have any advice? Has anyone gone through this before?

Thanks

TrevorK
The ticket is probably the same the guy here got for the bus lane infraction "Failure to obey a traffic device" right?

If so, that's 3 demerits.

bunch
Yeah "Failure to obey scribble scribble" Three f@cking demerits!! Head are going to roll! You know this forsure?

It's a messed up system when turning left at a minor intersection is more costly than speeding. Useless greedy bastards. :finger:

POX

Yup - it's definetely 3 demerits (Got one myself a long time ago)

As for fighting it - you may be able to get the fine reduced/demerits taken away. But at least go in there with a better excuse than "I'm a poor student".

Do some digging, find a comparable charge with a fine only and no demerits that you can get it reduced to. Or calls traffic ticket people - but they charge ~200 most likely...

MightyMidget
sorry man.....150% deserved!!!!! pay it and take it like a man....you break the law and feel that cause you are a 'student' you should have special rights.....ya ok..... :tear: a litte more!!! fight it a but at the most you may get it reduced...

hes not asking for special right hes asking for spical consideration cause he is spending his money on bettering himself and giveing him self a future

so why shouldnt he be treated better then the punk that does nothing all day and goes nowhere in life?

Insomniac
because popo shouldn't judge people based on age, status, etc.

Why is it we hear people complaing:

Waaaaa!!! I got pulled over. Cop threw the book at me cause I'm young and have a nice car! Just cause I have money! Waaaa!!!!

Then the students start their welfare schpeel:

Ahhhh! the bastard gave me a ticket!!!! He should give me a break cause I'm a poor student who needs my money so I can buy books and become a contributory member of society. :crying:

Insomniac
We should rename this section from "Speak w/ Your Local Law Enforcement" to "Please give me a place to complain about cops and tickets"

What a joke.

monztur
Fight the ticket.................. If the policeman does not show up ( it happens a fair amount) the judge will dismiss the charges ... dont let anybody tell you that this does't happen, as It has worked for me a number of times......

i'm not saying to just go and pay the ticket, i'd fight it as best i could.

just quit your bitching look at me i'm so poor i'm a student i should get discounted tickets sob story.

driving is a privelage, remember that.

littledan
f@ck that... i understand that some tickets are deserved... but the popo have far too much power in their hands and not all of them are responsible enough to make appropriate judgement calls... i have been harrassed by cops in the past and i'm sure this won't change. i have also had good experiences with police... all i'm saying is the bad apples can kiss my pasty white ass...

If you rec'd a Section 57 Use Of Highway & Rules Of Road Regs ticket - Fail To Obey Traffic Control Device then the demerits attached are: 2 & a fine of $172.

If you wish to talk w/ the Traffic Prosecutor you may wish to suggest a guilty plea to a Sec 26 or 27 Use Of Highway & Rules Of Road Regs charge (please check out the first attached link). The demerit points are the same but the fine is $115. I cannot guarantee the Prosecutor will consider it but it is another option.

I was a student for a long time too prior to getting into the RCMP but I never felt that I was exempt from the laws because of it (& I was also taking a Criminal Justice course & some of my students friends felt that they were not only exempt but way above .............. not!!).

Jimbo :dunno:

redbaron303
Jim's right....

As I said before, if you can fight every ticket... it's worth trying... what's the worst that can happen, you've wasted some time and still have to pay that ticket... or it's been reduced in some way! :)

HKSpowers
Just remember the face of the cop. One day when you a big time bussiness man, or somebody with power. Wait and see who will come across your path again!

THEN SCREW HIM AND SCREW HIM LIKE CHRIS PAYING FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT!!!!! :thefinger:

Im assuming this was the first ticket you have gotten that had demmerits attached to it. We all bitch and complain the first time we get a ticket... cops are assholes, they have nothing better to do blah blah blah. Face it you did something wrong and you will think twice before evr doing that again and that is the whole point that we have penalties for people who break the law. I felt the same ways when i got my first ticket a STUNTING TICKET, that served as a wake up call and i dont do stupid shit with my car anymore.

I am not complaining because i'm a student. It's the principle of the matter that really bothers me. The fact that the police were ticketing people at a very small intersection for making a sometimes necessary left turn bothers me. The fact that i can think of countless ways that they could better spend the taxpayers money bothers me. The fact that the fine/demerit(s) for this infraction rival a speeding ticket bothers me. I'm not crying. I am capable of paying the ticket. It's just that i don't feel that the demerits associated with this particular offense are justified. The repercussions of this event will have a significant impact on my driving future and i think that it is a shame there was no other reason for the police to be there than to make money.

TrevorK, albertarc - thanks for the advice and the information.

Insomniac - see above post

POX, dan - thanks

Nis240 - This was not my first demerit-related ticket. I will complain, though, as i do not agree with it (see above). I know the point of having laws, but in this case, i believe that the punishment is not justified. Also, a stunting ticket (although i do not know the circumstances) is a little different that my situation.

Keith - Agreed.

Deathby240, Schlong - Whose time am i wasting? Certainly not yours. If you didn't want to hear what i had to say, why did you read/reply to my post? I certainly don't think that it is a waste of time and, although i accept that i was in the wrong, i will try and get out of this situation as best i can. Insurance is a huge issue for me and i would like to continue driving.

Put yourselves in my shoes for a minute. I'm sure that you have never made a turn/u-turn when you shouldn't have. And also, i'm sure that you would just shrug off the ticket it you were picked off while doing so.

k_mac501

umm ya you are cause you are just whining about something YOU did wrong and were caught for it.....NOW you don't want to deal with the consequences of it.

and yes i have made u-turns but I have NEVER turned left when I was NOT allowed to. I am an angel :D

the PRINCIPLE of it is that YOU made an ILLEGAL left turn and were caught......seems pretty simple to me. Oh and the day someone is killed or kills someone because they made an ILLEGAL left turn then the cops will be spending the taxpayers money appropriately??

Oh and the police see very very very little of the money they give out for tickets!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey buddy, i think you need to calm down a little with the criticism. Who are you decide whats fair. I know the intersection where bunch received his ticket, and this is a rural area with absolutely no traffic on this street. This turn is the only chance along this avenue to turn left before 109 st. Any other way is a big inconvenience. And a ticket for turning left where your not supposed to seems pretty insignificant compared to all the drug dealers and other people who commit major felonies. But i see your point, a student trying to get to class early should be the one who is sought after by the police. And you have to love that your own tax dollars are going to a police force that would rather give tickets to students than try arrest real criminals.

If it wasn't for traffic tickets A LOT MORE of my tax dollars would be going towards them, so I don't mind them pulling over people breaking the law.

Certain laws I don't agree with, but I still do my best to follow them until they are changed (If ever) because that's what you do in a civilized society.

Why did you call it "reckless driving"? How pulling an illegal U-turn wreckless? Wreckless driving is like double that penalty you got...

Its only necessary for your conveniance! Wow aren't we special. Look man, there is a reason why the cops were there. Some local resident complained that far too much rushhour traffic was doing same thing as you did. Thus they took action and you paid the consequeces. Simple if you ask me. Go through the court if you wish, but its unlikely that they will do anything for you and all the others that got nailed that day.

my two cents

Hah - same reason that they've had the bus lane staked out on 97th street all week.

This particular intersection is not high traffic. There were three cars in the area and I must have been going about 10km/h when i turned. I don't think that there was much risk of fatality.

i was not responding to his opinion...i was responding to his remarks to tell me to calm down. and they(police) give tickets to students, teachers, welders, construction workers, nurses, all walks of life...but they should spend the tax payes money in other "better" ways......THAT's what I was responding to!!!!!!!!
