what is the difference between solid and hydraulic lifters?

GSR-TH
A solid lifter is one piece of solid metal. A hydraulic lifter is filled with engine oil, and it takes up the slack in the valve train. Solid roller cars need to have the lash adjusted periodically, and are somewhat noisier than hydro rollers. The one huge advantage with solid rollers is you don't have to worry about lifter pump up like in a hydro roller car, which greatly reduces the amount of RPM's you can spin. For a hydro roller in a small block car with somewhat sane lift, it's generally safe to keep it under 7000.
