Hi guys,
I have a question. Micro-lubcricants such as zmax for example. Do they work? Do the protect your engine? or are they just a scam? |

The additives will do one of two things, thin your oil, or thicken your oil. They in no way increase oil adhesion. The facts that they state are true, the engine will run smoother, get better mileage for awhile. That is until you put some serious driving to the engine, get more heat going and they will break down and cause some serious engine wear. Best bet is to always buy a strong engine oil right off the bat. If you look on the bottom of the containers some will have three stars, this is the oil you want to go with. Any of the oils that do not have the three stars are recycled at plants out east and put back into circulation, this is why shops save old oil from changes. Sadly people end up dumping anything and everything into those oil receptacles and these factories must remove all of it through a bunch of processes that causes the oil to lose some of its thermal effectiveness. Same goes for getting your oil change done at a lube shop, do not get the bulk oil that comes with the standard change, bring your own oil. I have witnessed drums 1/4 filled with water and coolant, old oil that people accidentally dump into the wrong drums. Not to be an ass, but most of the 16 year olds working at Mr. Lube don't particularly give a shit about making sure you have the best possible oil in your engine.
So yeah, like I said, look for those 3 stars and you should not have issues.

and all the ones with teflon or PTFE added in there.. (slick 50, blahblahblah). Teflon is a solid plastic, would you really want tiny peices of plastic floating around in your oil, and on your cylinderwalls, etc?

Z-Max's claim is to coat and permeate the cylinder walls. Permeate?!? I didn't know metal was pourous!
