RB20DET - Click HERE for Original Thread

Do any of you guys happen to know how much power the RB20DET will withstand on stock internals? How much boost I can run daily, no problems.

I run 10psi in my 300zxt now, and as far as I know the RB20 is a little bit more durable motor, though smaller displacement.... I don't want to downgrade in power for the same size car.

SRBURG13
Should make more power than the Z

redbaron303
Need min. of 220rwhp... :D

nissanz32
the rb20 motor is a pretty strong engine.I don't see you running into any problems with 220whp whatsoever.By the way what car is the engine going in to.

redbaron303
I'm thinking about A ZRII (200), it's a Z31 but came stock with an RB20DET instead of the VG30ET.... My Z's getting on in age, I was thinking about just selling it for whatever I can get and applying that money to a ZR200 b/c I still love the Z31's style and most that I have access to are very clean.

Dude, are you ever going to settle on a plan, and then actually do it? You've been going through Sooooooooooo many plans lately. Do you think like 3 in advance already? If so, which one is next ;) :D :thefinger:

redbaron303
I'll be driving a Silvia pt here, and my z will take too much work to bring it to what I want..... it's cheaper to just buy one w/ a better body :)

And the old school Z's are just too damn expensive.

I have detailed plans (minus engine mods) for about like 4 or 5 different cars :D

I don't recommend RB20s but they have thier place, a Z31 with a better body would be good, but you are giving a liter. That's a lot of torque gone.

Lol, yeah, I don't think that you will have a problem with that. The motor itself should be able to handle like 18psi. But its all a matter of what the turbo can hold.

That's something I thought about. When I drove the skyline gtst it was alright, I like the torque my vg30 gives but I also like the higher reving rb20.... they both sound good and push the car around decently, I wish I could compare the zr200 and the 300zx here w/ out buying one first....

I don't think there should be that dramatic of a difference.... even though it is one litre.

Jared, is there a reason you don't recomend RB20's?

redbaron303
It'll look like this hopefully, I hope I can find white! Not a lot of differences exterior wise, just under the hood and on the tach.

chris,

as aaron said the 20 should be able to hold a bit......the stock ceramic turbo maxes out at 14psi........

check out this very informative web site for what he has done to his RB20DET.

My advice, V6s are lame and a pain to work on. I6 all the way! The VG30 may be a light engine too, but it doesnt even run an intercooler :( Does the ZR-II have one?

redbaron303
yes, it's intercooled...

MightyMidget
Chris,

for the life of me I can't find the RB20DET info I had a while ago....but IIRC the guy was running ~280BHP and the stock injectors were at about 60%....with was with stock internals......

S

MightyMidget
FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!! go here for the RB20DET tuning potential.

a few quotes....
quote:
the stock injectors will stretch to 300hp (the target hp goal!) all that is required is a bigger fuel pump.

quote:
It was determined that the injectors were only running at 60% duty so there was still capacity for more fuel and more boost, but at 11psi and 280hp, the stock RB20 fuel pump was running out of rail pressure above 5000rpm. A new fuel pump was required if more boost was to be run.

quote:
On the 3rd run 147kw was developed, based on our original calculations thats...... 308hp at 15psi. Running HKS T3 turbo, R33 GTR fuel pump, retuned Ignition and fuel maps. Stock injectors, stock intercooler, ambient temperature is about 30C

so if you have a bigger FMIC you should be able to bring that up even higher....

S

MightyMidget
a few more.....

quote:
the GTR fuel pump raised the rail pressure so much that many of the fuel points had to be turned back to get a correct mixture. The stock injectors still had enough capacity in them, so it is thought that they might be enough to stretch to 320hp, with the GTR pump

quote:
Boost gauges: The boost levels mentioned on this page and throughout this web site that are from my car are derived from my Autometer boost gauge. It was only just discovered on the 2nd dyno run that the Autometer boost gauge is under reading about 1.3psi.
This mean that on the stock turbo that ran the 280hp run on 14psi, we actually were running 15.3psi, its a suprise that we didnt blow up the stock turbo doing it, but may explain how we got more than 260hp from the stock turbo. This also means that I am already running the HKS turbo above 1.1 bar (16.1psi), which is close to the limit for reliable everyday performance on this turbo.

OOPS!!!!

so there you go.....the RB20DET is still quite the engine......BUT then again its an RB...

Any RB has potential, but the RB20DET is the baby of the bunch. It revs the best though. It's like choosing CA18DET, it's small. My HPI #36 has an R32 with well tuned RB20DET running a GT30 turbo. Thier exhaust manifolds are set up for t3 turbos. With same mods SR20DETs around the world beat them. GTR injectors are a drop in.

redbaron303
Thanks Steve, that's appreciated information for me. I keep turning up japanese websites and I don't read japanes! :)

Jared - aside being the baby of the bunch and maybe not having as much potential as the sr20det or larger RB series motor... can you think of any mechanical BS that I need to know.... things to watch out for so I don't buy a problematic car...?

1mns13
Most of that info, is in my HPI mags.

redbaron303
Would mind lending me one or two for a little while, the ones you think may help me the most?!
