what would be the better swaps out of this three engines: sr20det, rb25det or rb26dett?
i know they are doing some american v8 swaps but i'm not a fan of that. i want to be a japanese breed still!
* i think the sr20 would be lighter= better balance for the little 240z. plus the engine has tons of potential plus it's probably one of the best 4cyl engine around
*the rb25det, i don't know much about this engine... i'm sure it has lots of it has lots of potential as well
* the rb26dett probably the best engine out of this three! well this engine is heavier than the sr20 for sure!
what i'm looking and expecting to get:
1) i want the car to get 250rwhp
2) i want the engine bay as sinple and as clean as possible
3) i want to spend the best bang for the buck
4) i couldn't of anything right now but if i do later on i'll post it ;)
what do you guys suggests? what's the best engine for what i'm looking to get? thnx :) |

| I have seen some sites with RB26 240z's but they have all been very high budget shop cars. |

| RB25dett...the best i think but it's kinda old so I think SR20 is the best bet.... |

| For that low horsepower goal use SR20DET. If you want double that use 1JZ-GTE, easier to get than the Nissan engines and better than RB25DET. |

Yeah, I was just thinking that too. That low of a horsepower goal, you can pretty much use any engine.
In my opion though, it just looks funny having a 4 cylinder in that thing. YOu need a nice Straight 6 in there.
Go old school, and knock up that stock motor. Mmmmm Stoker kit ;) |

The SR would look good in that engine bay and could yield some good potential for your setup.
I've seen the VG30ET, RB26DETT, SR20DET, 350CID Chevy, and even a 426 HEMI crammed into the engine bay of the old school Z's. My personal favorite is the RB26DETT b/c it's still Nissan... All the motors whether shoehorned in or not can work, it depends on what you want out of it.....
I never would have thought to use the 1jz-gte motor though?! How is that a good application within the old school Z Jared? |

i don't have anything against toyota but personally i would never put a toyota engine to a nissan specially we are talking about the old school 240z!

that's one option as well! but doing that i know the motor is not efficient(gas wise) as the sr20's and the rb's.
one more thing what is more reliable out of the sr20's, rb25's and the rb26's? are the rb block made by alloy?! |

| I would go with an sr.You are going to save a few pounds going with that instead of either rb's.Plus with running only about 250whp the more weight you save the better. It will also be a lot cheaper to buy an run an sr than it would be to get an rb series engine.Just my 0.02.Hope all goes well with the project. |

I completely agree with the idea of the power to weigh issue with the SR. BUT, for some reason I just can't see a 4banger in there. That car desires muscle. I know the SR is fully capable of this as well. I hope you know what I mean.
It all comes down to what you are planning on using this vehicle for. Show, racing, drifting, autoX, road coursing??? If it is just to drive around town, and show it off, personally I would go with some form of 6 cylinder, the grunt from a nice straight 6 is unbeatable (I'm not completely biased on the SR ;)). But if you are planning on just racing it, then yes, the SR would be the motor of choice.
Now you also have to think long run. Getting parts for the RB motors and even some parts for the SR are difficult to get immediately, and some cost an arm and a leg because there is a large demand for these things. So as cool as the RB is, i think parts would be a pain in the ass if you are unpatient.
The money you would save on buying the old school straight 6 (I forget the motor code for that, I think L24), and modding that over the RB and SR would definately cover the lost money in gas.
Thats just my opinion. Of course it all comes down to what YOU would like to see the car doing, and how much money you are willing to spend, and how much patients you have.
Good luck.

well i would definately go with the rb25det myself... its fairly cheap....and has the same or close to the same potential of a 26dett......and it is a rear wheel drive motor already, verses u buying a tranny for the 26dett.....we all know a person will switch to a single turbo anyways so.......
my thoughts would be a 25det

Here is what should be done: Visit Sumaru's Auto.
L28 Block (Old School 280Z or 280ZX block)
Maxima Diesel crank
Forged high-compression pistons
Carrillo Rods
Custom ported head (E88, N42, etc)
Race cam built to Sumaru's scecs
triple 40mm Weber or Mikuni Carbs
Nissan Comp header
Sumaru's Auto has been building old school Z's for over 15 years, contact Reg and he can give you a price on a killer street setup.
The one thing you'll notice about the old school carbie setup is the seat-of-your-pants power you'll get from that engine. Its either on, or its off... Its not smooth like a turbo setup. I've driven many a "tuned" L-Series engine, and there is no better feeling than hearing the triple carbs and exhaust screaming bloody murder. Sure the turbo stuff might be quicker in the quarter mile, but from stoplight to stoplight, the old L-series can give anything on the road a serious run for its money.
Your power expectations are well within the streetable limits of an old L-series as well. |
