Does anybody know where a guy can get his hands on materials to make a custom fiberglass enclosure for a sub. I saw a show on tv where they used some fibeglass that comes as a fabric then you put on the resin(spelling?). I'm sure it's not but it look kinda easy. I wasn't sure if you could get that here in edmonton, any ball park prices would be good too.

canadian tire has all the fiber glass supplies you will need. just when building do not i repeat dont skimp on the resin

For fiberglass stuff, go to Marine repair shops, you will get a better product at a better price. I spent about $200 on fiberglass/wood/hardware (I had a connection that got me free mat) and my install was with a carpeted false floor with the subs in the spare tire well. It sounds like you are looking to do a painted fiberglass install which is a lot more difficult.

My advice is find someone who's done this before and get their help. Budget a lot of time(I spent about 100 hours on mine) and extra cash for problems that may arrise. Also, measure everything 4 times and then measure again. Set out a plan and a detailed diagram and go from there.

fibergalss os easy to work with in my opinion.. iahve been using fibergalss for 4 yrs now and i have rebuilt my sailboat twice after serious damage.

for starters..don't even think about going to crappy tire for fiberglass..after opening the can of resin you will get so high you will forget what you wanted to do with it..

Go to boatcraft it is on 106st and close by argyll ave..just look up the address

BOATCRAFT

buy the WEST EPOXY system. and buy fiberglass cloth and mat. fyi..mat is for inside of box very strong but difficult to finish smooth or clean...taht why u use cloth on the the top of mat to have nice smooth finish

and last but not least but some bubble glass..to mask any dimple or inperfections on your box kinda like putty but made of fiberglass.

get some latex gloves if you think 4 is enough buy 8...best just buy the whole box.

oh you have to work in a stable condition environment..garage is good but if it is not heated and maintatined at least 10-15 degrees...you will have long dry time which can lead to aggravtion..and diappointment. got questions ask?

I saw that show too, can't remember what it was called. But fiberglass work isn't all that hard, it is the sanding and making it look "nice" that is the time consuming part. You probably gonna find it hard if you want to make a custom fiberglass enclosure right off the bat. That show gave the basics: make the wooden structure, put cloth over, dampen with resin, reinforce with fiberglass, sand, sand, sand, plastic filler, sand, sand, sand, sand, paint... But there is a lot more little things than that. Also look into if you have a place to do the fiberglass work, fiberglass resin stinks and the work stinks so if your going to do it in your garage make sure you have it properly ventilated with the proper PPE (personal protective equipment ie: dusk mask, gloves, etc).

The Marine boat shops are very expensive if you want fiberglass stuff. They sell "brand name" fiberglass epoxies, resins, etc. I went there and was amazed by there prices. IMO WEST EPOXY system is good if your building/repairing boats and stuff but for a sub enclosure it isn't very cost effect, and polyester resin is better. Epoxy resin is superior to polyester in strength, water resistance, and especially in its bond strength to old work. Unfortunately, it costs about 3 times as much and is harder to work with. The fiberglass hut is the place i buy all my fiberglass stuff, he has very good prices and you can buy big drums to small pails. Im not sure if he sells epoxy systems (never needed it), but polyester resin should be more than strong enough

ya get prepared to spend waaaaaay too much time on this. Everybody says fiberglass is easy, but i dont ahve the patience to sit and sand and sand and sand. I decided id rather pay somebody to do that shit, cuz itll always look better when the pros do it. Ive got a hook up tho.

Well the thing is it's not about the money or even how good it looks. Don't get me wrong I would love it if it turned out great. The thing is I'm not very mechanical to start to mess with my car, but it would be nice to say that I built something for it. This is more of a learning experiance then anything else. If people like my enclosure then I can say I made that myself, I know it sounds lame but hey you won't learn sh>t with out trying.

By the way where is your hook up?

well, id seriously recommend getting a committed buddy to help you out with it. Its way harder than it seems. And ull get high off the resin fumes :D Anyways, if you dont care about screwin somethin up, then go nuts, but if ur serious about it turnin out mint, get an experienced friend to help you out. And my "hookup" is a buddy who helps me out. Anyways best of luck with your project! B)

i think some ppl have it backwards...polyster resin stink..:puke: not the west epoxy system, and also the west epoxy system dries clear and white not yellow. the system is not overly expensive..i think it is real good price..but to really see cost saving you have to buy the pails...but even the small conatiners are good. the epoxy system in my opinion is easier to work with..you should get a dust maks for the sanding part but for actually applying the figerglass as long as the area is ventilate you will be fine..west epoxy system doesn't ahve a a strong odor unlike other fiberglassing kits. if you were to make staright face box (square /rectangle)..you will be suprised to know if you set up work properly you vcan be done in the weekend and have it installed in your car..but if you wannan it to fit the corner like a glove..the will require time..and i PM you all that.
