Do you still own the old car? If so then you cannot use the plate off of a vehicle that you still own. If you don't own it still then it is totally legal to do what you're doing.

Jimbo

(I wasn't sure if the "Bill of Sale" you mentioned meant you sold the car or it was the one you rec'd when you bought the old car)

P.S. Make sure you also take your current insurance & registration certificates w/ you.

Jim, when I spoke with the people at the registries office regarding this issue they said I could use my current license plate on a new vehicle for up to 14 days before I need to transfer the registration to that new vehicle regardless as to whether I still owned the old one or not?! Why would they tell me this b/c it doesn't seem true according to what you said?

TofuBoi
^ agreed with redbaron On this.......... i phoned my insurance about a car i bought this summer and they said i just needed to put my old cars plate onto my new car and they'll insure it...... they said my car will be insured for 14 days ........ so i had to register within that time ..... :D

midnite
the bill of sale would be from me selling my current car to someone in the next few days, i won't own it anymore.

thanks for your answers! :D

Here's the info on using an already existent plate on a newly acquired vehicle - check out Section 86.

http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/documents/Regs/200...isbn=0779723988

Where this becomes sticky is that the license plate you are using must be tranferred over to the newly acquired vehicle within the 14 days. A lot of people believe that they can use a plate off of a vehicle they already own to get a recently purchased vehicle back home & then the plate goes onto the original vehicle again - NO.

 Chris ... you are right (gee I hate when I have to admit that I'm wrong). I learned something new today as well.

Jim, I just read that section... My interpretation of what is said there is slightly different than is the actual law... It seems like it's not a problem to use a current license plate on a vehicle you've newly purchased for up to 14 days and then put that plate back on your other car and buy a new plate for the new car...

The section suggest for reading is rather vague IMO, and can be left up to poor interpretation.

Here's the question of the day: What is it that you do if you stop someone who has a car registered as a honda but they've purchased a Nissan and that's what they're driving? THey've got their Honda plate on the new car, they have the bill of sale, and proof of insurance (my insurance co. told me to take my valid slips from the previous car as they needed the car there w/ the paper work to insure that car, but claim i'm still covered by the current policy anyhow).... does this create a problem for you, and what kind of tickets do we get out of this?

If you look at 86-3-b you will notice it says it has to be re-issued to the new vehicle

86-3 ... The licence plate may be displayed on the newly acquired vehicle for not more than 14 days from the date its ownership passes to the new owner if the new owner intends:
86-3-a ... to apply to register the vehicle, and
86-3-b ... to have the displayed licence plate reissued for use on the vehicle.

Chris, as far as your question: if you are within the 14 days there isn't much I could do. I would do checks through our dispatch (as we don't have computers in our cars) to determine the Nissan hasn't been stolen & that the Honda's registration & your driver's license is valid. As long as there wasn't any other reason you were stopped for ... you'd be free to go.

I guess I overlooked a few minor words... the difference between legal and illegal.

Thanks for the clarification on this issue Jimbo :)

Also, how do you guys look at the use of "d plates" issued for dealerships but being run on everyday vehicles (as the top boys at the car lot usually do).

Don't you have to have insurance on the new car before you drive it away? I thought you had to have the car insured, and you could wait 14 days for registration ??

ehos
You have to have insurance before you drive the car away.

It's a 2800 ticket (no reduction) without.

Flex
You can go to a registration office and get temporary registration as well. You can pay for as many days as you need to move the vehicle and they give you a paper liscense plate to put up in the window.

Thats what I did when I bought a vehicle from BC to drive it home as I had not sold my old vehicle yet.

this is true. i gave the VIN to my insurance company and they added it to my policy before i even saw the car, incase i wanted to drive it home that day.

with registration you can either use a plate from another vehicle, as long as you plan to transfer the plate to it within two weeks, or you can get an in-transit permit and drive legally without a plate.
