| Coolant flush? - Click HERE for Original Thread |

| I looked at my coolant today and it was a light shade of brown. I was told to get a coolant flush when I bought the car ('95 Sunfire GT). I would like to know if you guys had and good tips on how I can flush it out good, I looked in the holding tank and there was a bit of grit in there. So thats why I want to do a good cleaning, also is there an easy way to drain out the coolant?I don't know if putting the hose into the opening of the tank would wash out all the crap thats in there, let me know if you guys have any ideas. |

There should be a drain cock on the bottom of the rad, if not you may have to pull the bottom rad hose. Be sure to drain all coolant into a proper receptacle and dispose of it in a legal manner. Letting it wash down the driveway and into the storm sewer will just get you into a shitload of trouble.

| Do you think my garden hose idea will work, or do I need more psi? |

| Garden hose works fine. There should be a drain plug just like an oil pan. Take out your resevoir and wash that out too. If its really dirty maybe get some chemical cleaners to flush through. |

| well it suppose to be green thats why I'm flushing it. Does anybody recomend any good coolant or are they all pretty much the same? |

Goto Canadian Tire Buy some Prestone Rad Flush, and Coolant, (or MotoMaster if your cheap). Follow the directions on the back of the Flush bottle. Its pretty basic.
If your overflow is really dirty take it out and wash it.
And yes there should be a drain cock on the bottom of your rad.

| think for that year you should be running dex cool...check what you manual sayz or ask a the gm dealer...but holy shit brown wtf |

Ive seen overflow tanks that are coated with slime, and have shit floating in them.
Which is still better than having NO coolant, which I have also seen people driving with....Haha

dude they are feeding u with bad info.
You should ONLY be using Dex Cool purchased at ur GM dealer, it says so in the cars manual. And if ur coolant is brown u got problems. Its supposed to be orange/pink (looks orange comin outta the bottle, sorta pink on the ground) im leaking coolant right now so i fill mine every month or two. Dont use no shitty Crappy tire stuff.
For better info on j-body specific stuff go to www.jbodyalberta.com |

Bad info? Not likely... Just Info
Yes you CAN use Dex. You can use whatever coolant you want. Buy Prestone from another store other than Canadian Tire if it makes you feel better. Or dont buy it and get something else. It doesnt really make a difference.
Coolant comes in a few different colors. Maybe the last person to change his used green? Who knows.

| What makes Dex better than the Prestone or crappy tire brands. Is it enough to be worth the price differance?, that I'm sure there will be. I don't think there is anything floating in there just a lot of grit (dust I would think). The car isn't running hot or cold so it must be doing the job, except one time when I got cought in heavy traffic the guage started to show hot, but it went back to normal when I started to move again. That is why I want to change it incase that was the reason. Where do yo utake used coolant and oil to get rid of it? |

| Relax, were not that misinformed. He said '95, yes he SHOULD be using dex (or comparible), but, if green has been introduced to the system, than its contaminated. period. using dex (or comparible) would then be a waste of money. |

| dex cool lasts longer then regular coolent...personally I would not want cooent in my car for 5 years any wayz..shit floating in it..so freash fluids every couple of years... |

| fair enough, you can use other stuff, but its prolly not wise. It says right on the coolant tank, and also in the manual to only use dex cool. And its not expensive at all, so you might as well use what the manufacturer recommends. |

just water would work, unfortunatly it will rust your system out quite fast..

^^^ in a bind i said...not all the time. if u wana get all technical, coolant can be corrosive too.
thanks for the little link there too, but i did pass grade 10 chemistry! :) |

Its for people that dont know that most antifreeze = the same shit no matter where it comes from.

Water will cool better than antifreeze. But like you guys said, corrosion is always a problem....plus that freezing thing that seems to happen here.

coolant is coolant is somewhat correct. colours mean nothing -it's just the brand name of the coolant. but there's a difference between the "new" OAT [organic acid technology??] vs the everyday/"old"/generic stuff - the rust inhibitors in the OAT stuff just lasts twice as long.
if you get a rad flush done somewhere, they just took up a machine up to your car, add some expensive crap and it works like a charm...unless you have a crack radiator...we figured that one out the hard way once =) it's just pricey...like 75 bucks? |
|
|
| newtuner |
| Ya I think Lube X and places like that do it for 75-85 bucks, I figuered I could do it myself. One thing I don't know is when they hook up that machine does it pressurize the system or just uses a large amount of fluid to flush everything out. Thats why I think a garden hose jamed into the tank at full blast would do the same thing, I would also remove the holding tank and disconnect the return hose so the water drains out and not circulate in the system. Does that coolant flush stuff that you can buy at crappy tire do anything or is it just a waste of money? |
|

| they use a big pressureized system to do it - i dunno how much psi. we were gonna do a coolant flush on one of the guys' civics but he had a crack on the top, where the plastic is, and when we hooked it up and pushed the buttom, it sprayed like CRAZY out of the crack and all over his engine bay |

| I don't think I have any leaks, I have never seen any coolant on the ground. Granted it might not always fall on the ground or it could also have a leak on the top I could'n tell if it did. Well it won't cost me anything to try it myself if it doesn't work then I'll go and get it done a Lube X or where ever, atleast that way I will know if I have a leak or not. HA HA |
