Question about an engine - Click HERE for Original Thread

TheNeonEdge
Ok so as some of you know I have an Infiniti J30

Now what I would like to know is....

#1 What is the engine code for it { I believe it is the same engine as the last gen 300zx N/A }

#2 And how much It would cost to twin turbo it?!

#3 Any tips on mantinence or anything?!?!

Thanks for your help!

1. VG30DE. It should be written on the plate inside your engine bay.
2. Way to much
3. I dunno

Check out www.twinturbo.net and go to the tech forum. You'll find a pinned post at the very top on converting a NA to TT. Mind you its not the exactly the same car but the principles are all the same. Many guys have now done it on their 300z's, how successfully ?? Its cheaper to buy a turbo setup and build on it. I bought a 1990 300zx NA for 15K and a year later bought a 1990 300zx TT for $22.5K. There is no way in hell I would have been able to convert my non turbo foir under 10G's. (properly anyway).

Supercharging might be easier, less plumbing!

I have looked into converting the na to tt and it will cost quite a lot.You could also swap a tt engine in but the engine alone costs about $5000 and then you have a the little extra pieces that add up to alot. For your vehicle you could probably have it turboed but it will cost you.Try talking to someone like ProDrag or Sumaru's about it.

VG30DE, torquey...

Anyways, it's probably not worth the effort to turbo it. If you plan on racing it maybe run nitrous (athough that could be bad).

Maintanence w/ the VG30, you NEED and I mean NEED to make sure the timing belt gets done on time and such. VG motors are notorious for killing themselves when the timing belt goes, so make sure it's done... regular oil changes/tuneups and you should be good to go!

thanks everyone!!

Ya when I bought it i had to replace the timing belt because it was lagging super bad and everything, but that was the only problem and the old people who had it last probly didn't know that was alll it took.

Maintenance is best handled by a dealer. A VG30DET from a Japanese car should be a cheap alternative to a VG30DETT. VG30DET are not usually factory intercooled.

That is not an accurate statement. I know a LOT of Z32 owners personally, in Edmonton & Calgary, and also in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Plus I'm in contact with tonnes more all over north america via the internet. I've never once met or talked to or even heard of a Z32 owner who's snapped a timing belt.

Yes the VG30 is an interference engine. And yes the recommended timing belt change interval was initially 60k miles. And yes the big timing belt service is expensive. But... everyone gets it done. And the reason everyone gets it done is because no one (with brains anyway) wants to take that risk, being an expensive engine and all.

But to say "VG motors are notorious for killing themselves when the timing belt goes" is just... retarded. You may have well said ANY engine that's an "interference" engine will kill itself when the timing belt goes.... DUH!

But Z32s are not known (or notorious) for breaking timing belts. Just wanted to clarify.

Exactly.

redbaron303
Well if the are notorious for breaking a timing belt, and are an interference engine.... wouldn't that mean the motor will most likely die if that timing belt goes?

When I got my Z the one thing I was told to watch is the timing belt or it could destroy my motor if it goes.

They are NOT notorious for breaking their timing belts.

The only reason its brought up is because of the severe consequence if it does go. Its wise practice to change the timing belt at the recommended intervals. That's all. There's nothing more to it than that.

The timing belt should not even have been brought up. It is a fact of life for the majority of import engines. Which don't include SR or KA:D
