Who here has a custom turbo kit?

Im thinking of doing this...http://www.cse.uconn.edu/~yelevich/turbo/turbo.html

not for sure yet, maybe in the summer. I can get some of the parts dirt cheap from school as we have some vehicles here who are turboed but are just used for parts.

Let me know what you think?

If you made one, how hard was it really?

ChromeDragon
Not as easy as you might think, but if you wanted to go ghetto style and could pick up cheap/free parts plus do the labour yourself it can be had for under a grand easy. Keep in mind that it will be ghetto and will most likely cause your car to die and you to abandon it ala "ghetto style". heh. I thought about throwing a small system on the Corolla just for 5 or 6 psi, but I don't think it would work in the end, the engine is just too high compression.

Feel free to ask questions on CEvo, or pm me.

If you buy all the parts from companies (manifold, turbo, downpipe, etc) you might as well buy a turbo kit straight. If you "capable" to fab all the parts yourself you will be able to save money. If you do build all the parts yourself make sure and leave some extra money for when you go over budget (because you will). Also make sure and have a way to get around because your car will probably have problems or go over schedule. Make sure when you build your kit you can fix problems yourself because if you take it to a shop, there gonna be like what the f#$k is all of this. If you are not mechanically inclined and can not weld (or know someone who does) don't attempt it, if you barely have money to spend on a your car dont attempt it. You could get away with a "cheap" kit like a turbo w/ wastegate, manifold, downpipe, a rrfpr, some piping, oil lines, fuel lines for a reasonable price but you would have to keep boost down to like 5 psi. In my experience fabbing a turbo kit from stratch was a 7/10 on the hardest car thing i have ever done.

its not the compression u should be worried about as long as there is proper management. its the chopstick thin con rods.

the hardest part about ghetto turbo setups is fabricating a turbo manifold and then after u get everything installed - TUNING!

its kinda hit and miss for ghetto-turbo setups. on some cars its worth it, but it can be a total waste of time/money on some cars cuz of the effort u have to put into it.

That was the point Jeff, adding any more compression will snap those con rods like they are made of bamboo!

I've built a bunch of turbo kits. If you plan on making one that will last more then a month, its going to cost more then $1000.

I'm waiting until april to get started on mine, that way
1)I'll be out of school
2)I can ride my bike to work while my car is out of comission
3)It will be warmer while I work on my car
4)It'll be easier to test b/c drag strips will be reopening
5)I can ride my bike to work while my car is out of comission

Luckily the motor I have is cheap and available everywhere.

guess it depends on parts available that fit your application already... and I agree with prophet_ca, prepare to go over budget :P Heres a pic of my ghetto turbo... ohh it aint pretty though. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/491227/1

LOL, then you have the ultra convenient excuse to do a total build, if its just going to break anyways, right? :D

Hopefully my setup won't turn out "ghetto" but as long as it works well and stays within a reasonable budget I'll be a happy man.
