Hey All;
Here is a question for somebody with a stereo who has entered in the db drags (I think thats what they are called, stereo competition) in the past.
How does the mic work? Does lower bass get higher marks (i would assume)? Does the mic measure cab pressure? or is it actually sound?
and What are some good tracks to get higher db rating?

Depending on the class and who is hosting the event, the mic can be placed different places in teh vehicles. It can be mounted on the windshield, on the seat, or in front of the speaker or speaker port in the extreme class.
Simply, the louder the vehicle the higher score you get. You tune it by getting a bass mechanik cd and a mike from a local shop to find the resonant frequency of your vehiucle. Go through 1-100hz to fibd out whats the loudest, but it will probably be in the 40-60 range.
An i IASCA cd i had a really good track on it where it did a full sweep twice throughout all the hz in less than 30 seconds(time limit) |

Gage if you want to find the resonant point of your vehicle, I can burn ya a Cd with a bunch of test tones, and sweeps on it if you like :)

| A word of advice...don't use sweeps when in a competition, just use the tone that you've found to be the loudest. |

i have an old db meter gage.. im pretty sure we could use it to find out the resonance freq..
When I saw the SPL thing at the SCC last, they attached the mic to the windsheild near the front passenger side speaker...

| Your best bet is to get a freq. sweep and find which frequency works best for your car. Then the key is to find a song on a bass or competition cd that hits at that frequency several times. Generally, if the guys are nice, the other competators will show you some of their tricks to get that extra DB or so. |

Also most guys in the dB drags do little blurbs of sound rather then constant bass, like blurb.....blurb....
Think about it right...you know when they have those screaming contests...the people who do teh best are the ones who go aah....real loud instead of a long steady scream....
SPL ---> Sound pressure level
You want to make the most pressure in your cabin as possible...sidenote always wear hearing protection...that is why blurbs of sound work teh best... |

| hehehe you dont need hearing protection.. just realise that if your system his 136 dB's from the seat... thats the amount your ears are receiving. As a side note, that is the equivalent to standing next to a jet engine. So if you want to protect your ears.. wear hearing protection.. unless your one like me who already notices some hearing loss:( |
