So who drives a daytona on this list?

I'm just curious. I've heard some rumors that there are some pretty fast daytonas around here, which is great, it makes my sorry POS look better.

Keith303
Daytona I-ROC R/T runs 14.8 1/4 with a tubro 6 cyl, thats slightly faster then 2nd gen awd DSM's.

I gove props to those cars

SHIFT_AT_9000_RPMS
I learned to drive on one ( back in the day @ driving school )

VerbotenZ34
Heh, I had a POS base model '89 ES as my first car. No A/C, so it got damn hot in the summer. It wasn't nearly as fast as the Shelby Z from the front page, obviously :D
BTW, welcome to the Community!

IDiOM
Heh;

I drove a plymouth turismo for a while, it was my first car. ;)

Had some 15" rims that I bought with 50 series rubber and a stereo. ;)

Some pics. heh.

Keith this is your car you're talking about? Turbo 6 cyl? That doesn't sound quite right. Explain to me how you got it all to work, because my ES is the 6G72 SOHC and I've been trying to figure out how to run boost on it since I bought it.

stuff
I just bought a 90 es turbo 2.5 litre. It seem spretty quick but I have only driven it for about 200 km on the snow and ice so its hard to tell.

I hear they can be pretty fast too.

hearse
The base 2.5L isn't much to write home about; I think it's about 98 horsepower. I'm not sure what the torque specs are but I don't think they're anything worth mentioning either. What you really want to look for is an ES with the 3.0L V6 (like mine) which is more than just pretty ground effects. I have a short ram intake and a ported and polished intake manifold. I estimate I'm running about 160hp and maybe 180-190lb-ft of torque. My car weighs in at 2770 lbs or so, and it fucking moves.

The 2.5L can be turbocharged though, which is good. There's hope for you yet. Of course, so can the 3.0L. The jury's still out on that one though.

hearse
ohh whoops, I missed the part where you said it was a turbo.

:p

Keith303
I got mixed up i ment the 2.2L DOHC 16-valve SMPI turbocharged 4-cylinder (224 Hp @ 5,800 / 217 lb-ft @ 2,800) with high-performance 5-speed manual overdrive transaxle
ran high 14's

3l v6 nothing special

hearse
nothing special huh?
well we'll settle that on the track one day.

Cant wait to see this.

And what a Daytona can do.

hearse
well seeing as how it's winter out, I guess it'll be a wait before you get to see this thing perform.

Which gives me a couple months to back up my shit talking.

Pro Drag
What? There are actually turbo Dodge enthusiast's on this board now? Rob is going to have to sign up, now you will never hear the end of it.;) :D

stuff
Yeah I think the specs on the 2.5l turbo are 150HP and 180 torque. From what I understand, in 91 the same engine had a ew tweaks to put it to 174hp and 210 torque or something like that.

hearse
I think the 174hp version was in the VNT and the Shelbys if I'm not mistaken, but I very well could be. I can look it up for sure on allpar.

Oh, and as for Pro Drag, my car might be a dodge but it's still powered by Mitsubishi.

hearse
Okay so here's the breakdown from allpar on the different turbo engines.

The Turbo (I) 2.5L started in 1989 with 150hp, it replaced the previous turbo I that was a 142hp 2.2L. In 1990, the engine was upgraded to 152hp. It stayed that way until the end of the car's production in 1993.

The 174hp engine I was thinking of was the 2.2L turbo II. The turbo II came out in 1987, and was discontinued in 1990 with the end of the Shelby and VNT models. It returned in 1992 as the Turbo III (or as I like to call it the turbo !!!) with 224hp.

The 3.0L V6 came out in 1990 on ES models. It originally was mated to an A543 5 speed with 3.50 gears, but in 1992 was converted to SMPI from MPI and was mated to an A543 with 3.77 gears. The change from MPI to SMPI seems not to have affected horsepower or torque at all. I'm not sure what effect the different gearset has on the car's acceleration or top speed (I know technically what the difference should be - but I'm not sure if there's a noticable difference). I'm also not quite sure of what transmission options the 2.5L cars came with, but I guess that's some research you can do yourself. As far as I know abotu the transmissions: A604 automatic = BAD NEWS! A543=assembled by Getrag (rumored to be designed by them too, but that's simply a speculation).

Anyway that's all I've learned from allpar and just random research over the last 4 months or so I've been a daytona owner. Hopes this helps the daytona noobs out there, particularly stuff.

stuff
Yeah I like that allpar site - there is some good info and some good links.

newtuner
Well my first car was an '88 Daytona 2.2l I think it made 93 hp on a good day. After going through two engins (head gasket both times), new brakes all around, new alternator, battery, water pump (all in the same week) new tires, new back end (after getting rearended on the witer mud) new driver side window (after being broken into for the third time in a month) Two leaking rads, a new thermostat and a broken park break. I decided no matter how much money I put into the car at the end of the day it was still a Daytona I myself wouldn't suggest it as a project car. Don't get me wrong it was good for a first car, it got me to work (most of the time). You just have to know where to draw the line. Hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine. By the way watch out for the head gasket it seems to be the cars down fall.

Keith303
i didnt mean it like that, im sure its fast, high 15's stock?

SuperJay
I know there's a person that owns an iroc r/t in the city. He/she works at Edmonton Research Coucil on the southe side. It's white and it is authentic it has the correct badges. the motor was A lotus design. Good luck gettin parts for it and I heard the heads are terrible. 224hp intercooled turbo though. Were they not AWD?

Keith303
just fwd

newtuner:
It always seems that there are some problem cars among good ones. I had an escort before this, and I know I talked to a girl that spent $5000 on repairs on hers and thought they were all shit, whereas I never had to spend a single dollar on anything more than routine maintanence for mine. Same with my Daytona. I've had absolutely zero problems with it and spent nothing on anything other than a tune up and a few little performance mods. I know that chrysler small engine headgaskets are a real problem. My engine isn't chrysler built, so I'm not too concerned. Oh and about that parking brake thing, it probably wasn't broken. A few times I've pulled my parking brake all the way up and then a distinct snap happened and it came almost off, but I pushed it back down and it was fine again. Tires, batteries and thermostats are things that need to be replaced every once and a while anyway.

keith303:
I think it's low or mid 15's stock. I think with just a little suspension and engine tweek it could run in the 14's no problem.

SuperJay:
The motor was the same chrysler 2.2L, it was the heads that were manufactured by Lotus and are supposedly fantastic, but yes, parts are rediculously expensive for that model. I've heard the turbo used is a garrett T3, hence why the motor is known as a turbo III. Don't quote me on that one though.

REDX2NV
Daytonas suck, end of story.

<-89 ES 2.5 turbo swapped POS daytona running a wide open wastegate and about 15psi before the bov starts leaking, this thing has so many problems and poor build quality. Engine runs fantastic, everything else on the car just sucks ass.

Spike7ss
My bro had an 87 shelby Z turbo 2 daytona very fast car for what it was. price he paid for it........ $500 from auction:bthumbup:

90_Shelby
Heres another turbo dodge guy. Currently the fastest FWD in Alberta (11.84), and were stepping up for next summer. Hopefully we will make it out to the track more than once :D

New Intake I just built for the car  And a couple more pics here. http://www.performance-shop.com/yab...d=15157;start=0

Yeah I was reading about that conversion from some of the boys on allpar a while back.

Your car is absolutely amazing, I hope one day I can build mine to be fit to stand next to yours and command that type of respect.

MR99siR
my buddy a 91 stage 2 turbo (i think from from factory, go mopar!) daytona, with about 50k hard km's on it as well as the limited VNT shelby daytonas. Not sure what year that one is.

He says he's hit low 12's before but I'm never at the track and i've never see his car posted before so who knows. I just know he beats me by 10 car lengths =(

$100 says he doesn't run a low 12 or a low 13. And yes I will bet for real.

MR99siR
maybe take you up on a low 13.

his vnt is white, the other one is viper red with racing stripes if you've seen it at the track?

hearse
There's no way he'd even be running a low 13 if the car was stock. Now if he has some suprise mods, it's possible.

Stage 2 implies what? Or do you mean he has a turbo II?

TitanMS
If u find a Chrysler Lebaron sight.I know theres one for alta.Anyways they have a few 12'second cars with 2.2 turbo.I used to be a big fan.Does anybody remember the black Lebaron a couple years ago with all the chrome and wires??That was mine

turbomike

yes turbo II. obviously a 170hp daytona will never touch the 13's stock.

edit: he said its a 2.5L turbo....but i thought they were only 2.2L. I dont know enough about daytonas but he has the following:

MP Performance Computer, TAFT Stage 2 Cam, TII Intercooler, Ported & Polished Head, removed cat and boosted to 20-lbs., Forward Motion Cut-out Riser, 42 lb/hr injectors, full 3" Exhaust, Eibach lowering springs, and KYB struts

TyPhOOnSliPPerY
barbie car .....

Rob from Pro Drag should be all over this ......get him on here Blaine

hearse
i keep hearing about this rob guy. Major turbo dodge player?

VerbotenZ34
Maybe you need a 4G63,.....It would kick major ass in the Daytona body!

Verboten (ya ya, I know I drive a Chev, but I owned a Daytona before, so I have a soft spot  )

hearse
i'd need to shed some pounds first I think, I also don't know exactly what mods I need to make to allow it to fit

Tyangelo
1985 Daytona Turbo Z over here. 142 ponies stock, and I've maybe added another 10 or so with a new computer, CAI, exhaust, and new ignition. Lookin for tons of mods this sumer including rebuild...aimin for 12s or 13s sometday...that'd be awesome
