take your protein... - Click HERE for Original Thread

before, after, or during your workout? When's the best time to take it?

Oh, does anyone feel dehydrated easily when taking protein shakes regularly? Damn, im always thirsty! :(

I am using the SOY delicious soy protien (no createin or anything silly, just straight up protein). I take it generally after a hard workout (in my case a full day at work is the equivalent of a day a the gym).

Taking it after work seems to warrent good results, I no longer have chicken arms and am developing some nice muscle! I recommend SOY delicious as a good protien supplement!.

Don't forget though, as with anything, cardiovascular workouts are also required in order to maintain a nice trim and cut look as well! They are also the MOST important for health!

Though I am sure everyone knows that

i was taking protein stuff, but i think i was taking too much of it, cuz i was shatting like 10 times a day (like u needed to know that, right?) But i was told that i should tone down the intake of it, otherwise it just goes to waste cuz ur body can only take so much protein every day. Get flex on this topic, that man is a genious when it comes to this stuff.

Should ALWAYS have protein shakes after a workout. As well, you should always have some protein before bed (Protein powder + water, that way you only get like 4-6g of carbs).

Further, you should always have something within a reasonable time before you workout, or else you will not have any energy (I know I would get hunger pains if I hadn't had something for the past hour/two before workout).

Bottom line:
Never workout on an empty stomach
Always have protein (Plus more of course, should be a healthy meal) post workout
Always have protein (and no carbs) before bed

You can have protein before or after a workout. Before a workout you should have something more then just protein though, to get your energy up so you can have a better workout. Add some carbs to your shake.

After a workout, remember your body will be absorbing everything you give it quite quickly because you will be depleted after your workout. So taking in protein after a workout is good as well. You body will suck in all the nutrients.

As for taking protein before bed, chances are something heavy like a shake will sit in your stomach and make it hard for you to sleep. A really good protein to eat before bed is cottage cheese. Its high in protien and its a very easy source for your body to digest. So your stomach isnt going to be working overtime to digest it and keeping you up.

The casein protein is ideal because it will take longer to digest than whey, which is perfect for overnight.

However, isn't the biological value of it different than whey - making whey + water a better choice?

Theres tons of writing on which proteins are better. I take whey protein as it is supposed to be the best source for muscle building. But I have also read that its harder for your body to digest and in large quantites can actually be hard on your kidneys.

The more natural sources being eggs and milk protein are supposed to be eaiser for your body to digest but not as good for muscle building, so its a trade off I guess.

The absolute best time for you take your protein is immediately after your workout. This is the time when your body is primed for muscle growth and will thrive on the extra protein you give it. Immediately after a workout, the body has an enhanced ability to utilize glucose and protein in order to rebuild and recover from your exercise.

I don't know how conducive to working out this one is, but I found that the other best time to take protein is first thing in the morning, immediately upon waking. Your body has just been fasting for 8 hours and needs a kick start of protein. This will help wake you up too, atleast I find...

I also take the SOY protein, it tastes soy good.

....anyways, as far as feeling dehydrated,,,, i dont nkow what it is....i AM taking the required amount....even more than the reqired amount! I try to carry a water bottle with me wherever i go.....

I think i may have read somewhre that high protein diets can weaken your bones? ...but doesnt weight training and taking milk with your protein (hence the "shake") compensate for that? I dont know :dunno:

Never heard that before.........and protein is the building block for recovery and growth....don't know how a high protein diet would weaken your bones.
