Steering Question - Click HERE for Original Thread

I am looking at buying a 1993 mx-6 mystere and everything seems to be alright on the car other than one thing with the steering. When u steer either way it doesn't recenter itself now i haven't had the chance to look under the front end so i don't know what it is really like at the moment. It not recentering didn't seem normal so i asked the guy and he fed me this BS that on alot of sportscars the steering is like that. NowI have talked to both the mazda dealership and another mechanic and they agreeed that stock it should recenter. Now i will admit that i really don't know all that much about performance work to the steering and i still doubt that it would be becuase there isn't really any of that kind of work done to the car.

I will probably get the car in the air to check it out tomorrow but it isn't a sure thing and ijust wanted to see what you guys thought of it, if it might just be something that the person might have done to the car or what would have to be fixed and i guess more importantly what it could cost me (doing the work myself ofcourse).

Cars recenter themselves? Since when? That usually just happens because of the tires on the pavement when turning, theres no device that recenters your wheels (as far as I know, haha.)

If the car moves at all and you can turn at all, Id imagine it would pull the car straight again when you release the steering wheel.

Maybe im misunderstanding.

But get the alignment checked. Toe in, etc bunch of things could be wrong. Get it checked.

lol recentering .. eg. if you were driving down and turn the wheel to go around a corner if you were to let of of the steering wheel the car would straiten out the wheels for the most part by itself beucase of the offset of the upperball joint compared to the lower (i believe not sure tho). I guess i should have been a little more spacific. Now if what i said aobut the balljoints is true then i would think that that offset is not there anymore and they are strait up and down from one another now (again not 100% sure)

I get what you mean, But I dont think that has anything to do with it.

Theres nothing that can change the relative angle between the 2 balljoints (as in bad driving). If the balljoints are blown that still isnt gonna change the angle. And it cant be camber issues, you'd physically notice it before you noticed any steering problems.

I fail to see that when your turning a corner in this car, that if you let go of the steering wheel it will keep turning in the same direction. If the car moves at all it will pull itself straight.

Either the seller is an idiot and doesn't know anything, or else he's a scam artist and knows that he's feeding you bull.

Every car will return to center when you let go of the steering wheel, unless there is something mechanically wrong.

You could have some front end components gone bad, you could have a bad power steering pump (does it make a lot of noise when you turn the steering wheel when the car is cold?) or you could have a bent steering rack.

In any event, you must get the car checked out. It's not a case of "if" anything is wrong with the car, it's a case of "what" is wrong with the car.

Considering that he's misleading you about the steering, I would be suspect of everything else on the car, too. Get it all checked out.

Rack and pinion steering boxes "ramp" up on either side as you steer and then bring themselves back to center when you let go of the wheel. If the cars steering is sticking, then I would expect that there is some pretty serious issues there. Make sure you have that all inspected and repaired.
