USDM vs JDM exhausts, why the difference??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
Seems like North Americans like to use Mandrel Bent Piping for their exhausts and Japanese weld together sections of pipe to make the bend (seen in following picture).

I would really like to know WHY it seems to be preferred by JDM tuners & companies over Mandrel Bends....and what is this exhaust style called???

ChromeDragon
It's called ghetto pimp style. It's a tuner thing, they obviously have mandrel bent stuff there, but tuners like to weld pieces together to create their bends because it looks sweet when you grind it all down and polish it up!

REFLUX
you've got to be joking...

maybe because it's cheaper than mandrel bending (at least cheaper than the machine...)

curtis_rak
That seems like an incredible waste of time.

It looks funky, thats about it.

VerbotenZ34
They do it because it gives them:
SUPERA BAKFOW! :p

okay, don't take my word for this because i "heard" this without any actual proof or evidence. but, they say that there are no mandrel benders for titanium or they are too expensive for the average japanese tuner house. so instead, they cut section of straight pipe to make bends to give it that effect.

AGAIN, DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT!

Mandrel bending will outflow a pieced together exhaust of the same diameter and steel any day. That exhaust just looks good, and I'm sure that's why they made it that way.

Man your a pimp!

I think mainly due to the fact that Japanese like to use Titanium for some higher end exhaust systems. Good luck trying to find Ti mandrel bends! From what I understand Ti is not readily formable thus the bends are fabricated from little sections. ;)

Insomniac
i've seen the Veilside Supra exaust and it had bends, Titanium, 8.5 lbs:confused:

this is one for an S2K i believe, Veilside full Ti:

:dunno: Cant see the fabricated bend to be better than a mandrel bend. Perhaps there are limitations on radius... I guess back to the question.. why?

You know it. :p
If it can be bent on a machine, do it that way. My titanium bender was down that day, so we had to peice it.
