Exhaust Question - Click HERE for Original Thread

Scintillater
i'm going deaf at high revs from the rumbling of my fart bucket. it's just straight piped, no cat, and a 2.5 inch tip on my magna flow muffler.

what's the cheapest way to quiet it down? i have a resonator in there so it eliminated that "ting" noise....but it's so friggin' loud. Is the only way to put a cat back on? (i took it off to begin with because my old one was rusting inside out and i dint' have the $$ at the time to replace it)

hehe... Welcome to the club "My car is too loud for comfort" :D

Quite a few mufflers these days come with a silencer plug that fits inside the exhaust tip. You can check to see if your muffler has that feature if there is a hole drilled somewhere on the side of the tip. This hole facilitates a fastener to hold the two pieces together. If not, you maybe want to look for an alternative muffler. I don’t think that putting the cat back in will help ya.

okey cool. thanks.

Go out and get a decent exhaust that doesnt make your car sound like a weedwhacker. hehehe. actually.. part of the problem is the straight back pipes. While they provide decent air flow.. they tend to make the entire exhaust sound quite noisy and loud. The res will only help a bit with this type of system. Really.. if i were you.. id redo my exhaust.. but thats quite expensive.. thus the silencer idea is probably best.

If you are looking for a cheep way to silence exhaust I remember hearing from one of my hot rod buddies that you can stuff plain steel wool into your pipes to help keep sound down. I have never tried this myself, but from what I hear it worked back in the 60's.

till it comes flying out of your exhaust in a flaming pile

id say find a silencer for it, what size piping are you running??/

Hick 5.0 Ford
number 1 problem is the 2 1/2" piping!!!!!!!
WAY too big shoulda gone withe 2" or 1 7/8".
Call up an experianced Exhaust shop and get their advice, or even get them to look at it. I know that exhaust inspections are free at Midas.

We had a guy come in with a Lude that had 2 1/4" piping we ended up putting a muffler from a malibu to get it to a quieter level.

I for one am gonna build my own muffler for my honda but I am still gonna keep the 1 3/4" piping. It will have a 3 1/2" chrome tip though:p

silverTEG
2 1/4 is ok for hondas

I hear turbochargers make cars quite..

;)

My Greddy exhaust it really quite around 2700 RPM or so.. its a 2.5 inch.. but its brutally loud when its anywhere else in the RPMs.. I like it though..

You really should know what you're talking about before you give someone advice like that. If it's a non-vtec integra 2" to 2 1/4" would be just the right size exhaust, and if it's heavily modifies you may even wanna go with a 2.5". 1 3/4 is too small, even if it's 1 3/4" straight through mandrel-bent. A mildy modded GS-R or a stock Type R will be best with 2 1/2".

Scintillater: If you wanna quieten it down you have a few options, which will help to varying degrees. First, the silencer option will help some, but will just add backpressure to the exhaust, thus defeating the purpose of getting the exhaust, although if all you have upgraded is exhaust it's not really gonna be doing much for you in terms of power anyway. Also, adding another resonator will help some (stock Type R B pipe has 2 resonators in it) and adding a cat will also help some. Finally, the best results would come from replacing the whole cat-back exhaust and getting something more quiet, and getting a high-flow cat. If money is a problem and you have a 3rd gen Integra try finding a used Type R header, cat, and b-pipe/muffler; it's a 2 1/4" system. I believe your a B18B Integra right? This would be a really good upgrade power wise and would be nice and quiet, plus the exhaust is all stainless steel as well. Hope that helps ya.

PS - why aren't you asking this question on Alberta Integras?

That's a far too general statement to be very accurate. 2 1/4" is pretty damn big for a D15 nonvtec engine but not so big for a modded B18C, and pretty small for a forced-induction B18 or H22.

turbochargers make cars a bit quieter... but not quiet. and not "quite" either.

Somebody should learnwhat size of the size of piping is all about. Sorry 5.0, but as long as hes upgrading his car's performance, a 2.5 with regular bends will not be bad at all for a size. Hell ill be running 2.5 with mandrel bends and that is perfect for my car as long as I have a few other mods.

 ya ya, thanks for the spell check eric ;)

WELL.....anyhow...i didn't post on alberta integras, coz the site was down, and since i'm HERE every day...well...self explanatory. I ended up going with a resonator, which cut it down by half. Originally, i was TOLD i had a resonator on there, but really, it was some sort of catalytic convertor, and the piping was bad, etc.....
So all that was replaced, got a cat and a resonator, and sounds much better. I still set off car alarms once in a while *Hahhaha* but tha'ts to be expected.

stealth
how much was the res!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i might need a new one :(
