I doubt the timing chain has 230k on it but you never know ....and it seems every ka 240sx I have heard running has that rattling or gurgling sound of the timign chain...

The timing chain probably does have 230K on it. You can buy all the parts for around ~400 and do it yourself. Shops usually charge around 800 for the job. A dealer will charge you 1300.

take your valve cover off and take a look first :drama: its a pain in the ass taking that timing cover off just swap your engine.

It might be the guides. They are plastic in the KA24e's so the wear with time and eventually break off i think. Check you oil level! I had a similar problem in the summer, and it was to due the oil level being low. After i topped it up, the noise disappeared.

here's a way to check without taking off valve cover.....
stick your index finger.... or whatever fits best...into the valve cover through the valve cover cap....and reach to the front....
you should be able to feel the chain...... you'll know if its loose...
like 180sx said, its more than likely the plastic chain guides that are gone.... take care of it soon or you'll start wearing holes in stuff....
trust me i know! |

When i got my car it had no problems...but i noticed that through out the summer there was a noise in the engine by the timing chain area. I got the same response from shops "$800 and we can replace a $30 chain guide". So I bought a timing chain and guide and ripped apart the engine and in 2 weeks the car was fine. By the way, it was the timing chain guide. Before i put the new one in, i heard that this was a problem with nissans and that they had a better timing chain guide out, but when i went to look for it, no one knew what i was talking about. So i just replaced it with the same crappy plastic guide. So YEA YEA I had a quite runnig car again....BUT the noise came back and i do believe that it is the timing chain guide. So my word of advice too you is to do a swap!!!!!!!! But if you just want to get the problem fixed, make sure you find a better timing chain guide IE. one with METAL backing. I do still believe that the one i had heard about is around and if you are going to take the time to do it, do it right. It is a pain to fix by yourself and can almost be imposible to do in certon engines without removing the engine. ( The shop will probably have to remove it if you get them to do it) So y not tell them to put in a new engine. Whatever you do, learn from my experience. I'f I was in your shoes, I would drive that engine till it dies and swap in a new one. Good Luck Man
