| Don't buy from dealerships or dealers. There used stuff is mostly auction stuff, that just passes safety inspections. They don't care about making them good. Buy private and always get a car inspected. |

Is this true to all dealerships?
Stay away on those dealreships that don't even want to give the VIN # of the car their selling...especially if the price is really cheap.. Yeah right ths happened to me...so even if the price was really cheap compared to others, I walk away...
I don't think BIG dealerships (e.g.TOYOTA,ACURA,NISSAN,BAVARIA etc.) would risk their reputation just to earn markups on their USED VEHICLES.
Treat both (private/dealer) with a pinch of salt! :) |

The Used Cars at big dealerships are pretty good condition now. Like ND4SPD, they won't want to risk their reputation on a POS. It's not worth a few thou profit.
Most of the dealerships have ownership on these independent used car places you see on street corners ("Honest Hanks Used Cars", etc.)
If the car you trade in to the big dealership turns out to be a POS, THAT'S where it ends up, not on the dealer's used car lot. |

I work for a dealer and I cant say that private you'll find better, or vice versa. Private - typically you will find better deals. But you may have to do some work to it. Most dealers do the work then markup.
Its like selling/buying a house, you want to make top dollar for it you hire and agent. |

It probably is not true of all dealerships, and it is true that beaters end up on beater lots not the main lot. But what I said about the work they do on the cars is also true. Many used cars come from auctions. I prefer to buy private and get something that has been taken care of vs. something given to auction. This said my two cars, one is from a salvage auction and one from the dealership I work at. |
