Amps - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was wondering what would be the best way to hook up two amps. I will have one powering 1 set of 6.5" mids with 1" tweeter and 1 set of 6x9" mids then the other amp powering two 10" subs. Would it be better to run two 4 awg from the battery to each amp or one 2 awg wire from the battery to a split block and then a 4 awg wire to each amp? Also I have heard a lot of bad things about caps, if done right will my system work fine with out one or do most systems need one any way?

Ayu
A capacitor if installed correctly will not harm your system at all. To prevent dimming of lights and what not myou will need a stronger battery, and a stronger alternator to boot.

For your wireing issue you can go the 4 guage to the split block and 4 guage to the amps, it also depends on how much power your amp has the more power is has (watts) you will need a thicker wire.

I think the final power rating will be around 750 to 800 (that might be a little high) I will be running a alpine MRD-M500 (500w) and a alpine MRV-F340 (260w/ 65x4). So I think I might go with the 2 awg to the spliter the less wires I have to run the better. Would most audio shops have the kind of spliter I would need?

Ayu
for sure, most places that sell audio equipment should have them it is a neccesity for mulitple amp installs, places like Futureshop, Best Buy, Visions, A&B Sound, Certified Radio, etc. All should have them, if you are using the 2 guage make sure the splitter can fit the wire that thick.

Ok where to start. First. 6.5" with tweets and 6x9's will likely only need about 400 watts rms in total. Second I have the m500 that you are talking about and I can tell you one thing, the largest size of wire that can be connected to any port on it is 4 gage. Even on that, it may take a few snips of some wire to put in. As for your choice of amps, just be sure for the subs that they are running at 2 ohms. The m500 is set to run at 2 ohms and anything less or more will cause you to have a lower MPO. Besides that, love your choice of amps :D, best of luck

Thanks man I will have two SWR-1021D (10") subs. I will be getting the two ohm ones ordered in for me(I guess they don't usally stock them). They will be hooked up to the M500, and the other four speakers to the F340. As for the ground wire can I just link each one coming from each amp and them take one big one to the car frame? Is any place that has has the paint removed and is metal a good place to ground?

hold it! I said make sure when they are wired up to combine to make 2 ohms. Im not completely sure of the wiring you will be doing but there are a few ways to wire a system, make sure the way you do it COMBINES to make 2 ohms. As a side note, if you absolutly cannot wire them up to 2 ohms, the closer you are to that number the better. I have the unfortunate circumstance of only being able to wire my JLs up to 1.5 ohms.

I strongly sugest you get a larger alternator as well.
Im pulling 40-60 amps current draw with my subs and the car only produces 77 amps @ 3000 RPMs.

I dont know what kind of power draw your looking at but if its a newer car then the alts usualy suck ass. The just put enough power in them to run the basic car, they dont expect 90% of customers to up the stereo to boot hehe.

Pro Drag can hook you up with a larger alternator.

Thats what I thought I would need a bigger alt. Hey Dark hows your ride doing did you get all your stereo issues worked out?

Darkrid3r
Na,

Christmas bills and my trip to sunshine hurt more than I wanted. Still working on saving tho.
I should be able to get my new alternator soon, perhaps by the end of the month.

Currently Im looking at a full new design for show next year :dunno:

I have decided to go total show and sound rather than performance. After all its a mazda protege'5 If i was going to go speed I should have purchased the wrx or the sti :p

I have not decided if I want to have the stereo stuff done professionaly or if I want to attempt it myself. The ground wires seem simple enough and after the alternator is in im sure i could possibly wire up a yellow top. As for the rest i dont have much of a clue :)

My alarm system needs an upgrade as well first.

I will make a new thread and we can talk about stuff.
