What's the best Digital Camera? - Click HERE for Original Thread

And where is the best deal?

ManHunter
that's too vague... how much are you willing to pay? Digital Cameras goes from 1 megapixel to 11 megapixels at the moment. With all kind of different features sets.

asking that question is like tring to pick your
favorite playboy play mate:dunno:

REFLUX
exactly

what is your budget? and what do you intend to do with the camera? Professional pictures, amateur, what?

but for a good all around camera, Canon A70

www.dpreview.com is an excellent resource

I think the best are the Nikon cameras, although you are looking at $1200+ for thier top of the line digital cameras, McBain Camera carries them.

SplineZ
Canon currently makes the best point and shoot cameras... the A60/70/80, but you will pay a bit of a premium for these.

He's got it broken down to "beginer, and enthusiast, etc" categories..

Do yourself a favor, and buy one with optical zoom; none of this digital zoom crap. You can tell usually when you turn it on if the lense extends out of the body. Its not a sure sign wether its optical or not, but its a good start.

Another much needed feature is "Macro Mode" This will allow you to focus on objects that are very close. This feature is found on some of the slightly more expensive cameras.. But the canon's do have it. (all of them)

If I were going for a 2 mega pixel camera (absolute lowest res) I'd go for the Canon A60, Nikon Coolpix 2100, or FujiFilm A205. 2MP cameras will allow you to print 8x6 pictures with decent quality..

At 3MP, i'd still go for the Canon A70, or The FujiFilm..

You can pick them up at futureshop

Remember, that more megapixels doesnt really mean better picture.. The lense is a huge factor in the quality of picture..

Read the reviews on the cameras you think you want... compare features, and then have fun :)

Be sure to get a card reader too.. They are really handy at takin pictures off your camera.. Some of the cameras come with bases that will allow you to plug the camera directly into your computer.

Oh yea.. take into account the memory card prices too.. fuji's XD cards are cheaper and faster than the canons compact flash cards, but are not as widely used..

If you post the cameras your thinkin of purchasing, people could give you there personal feedback if they've had experiance with that particular model or not :)

Parameters: Best Digital Cam 4 or over megapixels + $600 or less.

Some camera's I've checked out so far include: Pentax Optio S4, Konica Revio 510Z, curious about the Sony DSC-T1... Minolta XT was too slow, and featureless, Futureshop has a great deal on these 5 megapixel Kodak's for $399 but they come with a cheap plastic body, and are always sold out.

P.S.thanks for the link 'zine!

I would not hesitate to buy a canon A80... its a damn good camera.. that sony is interesting too.. such a large LCD on the back.. quite nice..

You might want to check out www.tigerdirect.ca . They have quite a selection of cameras. A friend of mine just bought a FujiFilm S5000 from there for under 500 dollars.. (3 or 6 MP depending who ya talk too).

Even mcbain cameras (www.mcbaincamera.com) would be a good place to check out. You would be able to test all of the cameras out in a working environment.. see which one your comfortable with, and the image quality right there.. FS just lets you play with the box :(

I bought a Canon A80 and I absolutely love it!!!

The swivel LCD screen allows me to take some pretty difficult shots with ease (no need to bend, lie down, tilt your head, crane your neck, etc)

If you want to see what it can do drop me a PM.

jsut before x-mas i bought a Canon G5 and it's unbelivable, great camera, i am very impressed with it:bthumbup: i bought it at mcbain just off whyte ave and 75th st

What about a nice cam under 300? all around, Amature

SplineZ
Canon A60 is 330bux from futureshop. You cant go wrong with it, but you will be satisfied with the FujiFilm A205, or Kodak EasyShare CX6230... both are under 250. Kodak and Pentax have 3MP cameras for around 330bux, both have optical zoom. So depending on what you wanna spend (at futureshop) they'd all be a good choice.

The G5 is an awsome camera.. I wish I could afford one ;)

nice picks terry, well I am looking for a dig camera, any input from fuji, pentax, the a60 looks pretty good. what are some basic features which I should look at

SplineZ
optical zoom is a much needed feature.. "digital zoom" is little more than the camera blowing up the image..

Battery Life... yea, more pictures per battery..

make sure it has good optics.. high end sony's use carl ziess lenses, canon uses their own (a good thing) fuji uses their own (also good), pentax uses their own (also good).. they dont start to use really good lenses until around 300+bux...

movies arent really a big deal to me, but to some people they are..

Macro Mode... allows you to focus up close.. thats cool to have too

check out steves digicams or imaging resource, they have a list of the "best cameras" by category.. Mind you its kinda like cars.. alot of personal prefernce is involved..
