anyone here into initial d?
i usually HATE jap cartoons with a passion, but i stumbled upon this series called initial d. its about street racers in japan - mountain passes with some pretty insane drift action.
its hard to find here on video/dvd so i just download the episodes individually. well worth it
heres a pic of a race taken from the series

| What is drifting anyway? Is that like when you can't hold a job so you keep "drifting" to other jobs/towns to stay employed? |

Well, I downloaded a few episodes and basically I made it through the opening theme and that was about it. What the hell does "Those who say 'Money can't buy my love' deserves a lariat three times" mean?!?!?!?
Iron Chef makes more sense than this. |

RAVEMAN PLAYS THE BLAZ'IN BEAT!!!
lol
I have all the music cd's, awesome to go driving with =P
Some of the songs are annoying, but some of them are awesome with thier wierd techno-disco hyper-trance. haha
My favorite one is gamble rumble, or at a light when I pull up to somebody (no I don't race them) and they rev the engine, I play the Civic race song which really loudly at the beginning goes MUAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAA (cool vibrations/dancin).
I love the look on thier face  |

That's part of the charm of watching the translated ones, the translations are freaking hilarious! I've yet to watch the dubbed ones myself, are they as good as the translated ones? |

the ones with english voices are just stupid :P
i reckon the ones with only english writing on the bottom are better, give more of a japanesey feel to it. the voice over'd ones just sound like a bunch of americans trying to act to japanese type cartoons. doesnt work :P |

the music from the anime is so catchy.. no matter how cheesy it gets lol. The series is still a good watch.. even after so long... arcade stage? is that the arcade game?
.... stage 4? :blue: |

Yea, stage 4, Project D.
As in the manga (japanese comic) we will see Bunta styling his new WRX Impreza, we will also see the beginnings of project D, beat everyone on all the mountain courses and set unbreakable records.

Well, I was finally able to sit down and watch a full episode of Initial D and I'm wondering what sort of audience it played for in Japan. I'm guessing it wasn't for kids since the copies I have have profanity and seem to condone child prostitution. The copies I have give meaning to some of the terms used in the episode and one is: "Papa = Older men sometimes pay young girls to be with them. The girl ususally refers to the man as "Papa"."
This seems like fairly mature stuff, so I'm wondering if anyone knew what sort of time slot it had in Japan and if it was meant for kids or adults because Pokemon this is not. |

Yeah some of the content seems a little odd that it's even included in the show, but it's a completely diffferent value system over in Japan. I think that it's a bit of a culture shock no matter where you go though, Japan is just a little more extreme.

| Oh also. It's quite likely that Mogi isn't actually a prostitute, she just hangs out with her "Papa" and he pays her for her time. A friend of mine was in Japan a few years back with his girlfriend and some older men offered them money just to sit with his girlfriend. It's somewhat of a status thing to be seen with a pretty white girl, much as the men in Japan prefer a young, untouched, innocent Japanese girl. This is where the school girl fetish of sorts comes from in Japan. |

Well I don't know about that. In the 3rd episode there's a conversation that goes as follows:
After dirty old man offers to buy her a bathing suit.
Mogi: "It's alright. I bought myself one already. I don't need two."
Dirty old man: "I want to see you in the bathing suit."
Mogi: "That's strange. You've seen everything. You're a pervert."
I still think she's a prostitute. |

Highly doubtful. I'm assuming you mean the Panda paint scheme that Takumi is running on his car. I've contemplated doing an anti-panda scheme though. The only time I would do the panda scheme is if I was going to put the car up for sale on Ebay and wanted to get some sucker in the states to pay more. With that paint and some Watanabes the car would sell for 4-5 times what I paid for it. What can I say, many Americans are fad whores.....and this is one fad I can make some money on. |

$4.94 for shipping dvd and if purchase is over $45 then shipping is free.
Not too shabby.
Actually I think if its over $39 then shipping is free. But thats only applicable if you choose for it to go through regular UPS so it takes about 4 or 5 days and you can track it. |
