I just formated my comp and was puttin xp pro on i have it installed and everything and it works fine, but only if the windows xp disk is in the drive other wise just after it checks the ide for boot it says
"NTLDR not found" and it makes you reset untill u put the disk back in, now wft is NTLDR and is there a way to fix it without reformating and reinstalling again because i did alot of work already b4 i took the disk out of the drive and i really don't want to lose it again
i know that there are prolly ways to just do the reinstall without the reformat but i want to do a clean install again if i am going to do anything cause the last time i did just the reinstall my comp messed up on me
thanks |

OK, I'm not a PC expert, but I play one at work.
ntldr is the NT Loader program. It's the first thing that runs when the machine boots and it pretty much takes over loading the rest of the O/S. I think that if you had multiple O/S's installed, this is the program that would give you the choice of which one to run.
Are you sure that the PC is set to boot off of the disk that XP is loaded on? When you boot the computer, go into the BIOS setup (usually be pressing the <DEL> key early in the boot sequence). Somewhere in there there are options for boot order. You usually want the floppy first. You can have the CD second, but it might take a couple extra seconds when you boot up as it tries to decide if the CD is bootable. Make sure the hard disk is in the sequence somewhere.
Other than that I would suggest starting the XP install process again. One of the first things it should ask is whether you want to do a new install or repair an existing install. Try the repair option. |

I am no expert on computers either but know enuf
the boot order is right i have floppy cd then ide-0 (which the hd is on)
i tried the repair lastnight didn't work and i tried reinstalling 2 twice last night staying up untill 3:30 and still no luck;)
I have talked to a couple of my friends that are either computer techs or programmers, and they have no idea either they have never heard of this happening, I am going to try a different copy of xp and see if that works and if not i guess i will just have to keep the xp disk in one of my cd drives, or go out and buy a new computer but ya i am broke so that really isn't an option at the moment
Thanks for the help tho |

this happens to me.
i have 2 harddrives, one with windows 2000 and on with windows XP. If use my windows 2000 as the boot disk, I get to choose whether to launch XP or 2000.
If I use the XP harddrive as boot disk, I get NTLDTR Missing blah blah blah..
I think you get this when you have a multi-boot environment, and install Windows on a different harddrive then the one you are currently running off of.
I'm not sure how to fix it, except to wipe your HD clean and install windows from dos with boot discs or a bootable cd rom. |

apparently you need some more help.
firstly xp doesn't get loaded from DOS as it is not DOS based
NTLDR is the NT loader kernel and takes care of making sure that your OS loads properly, when you formatted the drive did you fdisk it? if so you may have forgotten to set the partition as active and by doing so you are unable to boot from it which is why you need the cd. Or maybe one of the options when installing is to put all the system files on the HDD and I found that doing this will always help out with the loading of new devices. If you are still having trouble after checking this out let me know and I will see what else I can come up with for you maybe even come over and help you with the install. |

heh...sorry mr exacto, install windows from COMMAND LINE using either boot disks or a bootable cd rom...
why not download fdisk and reformat your drive from COMMAND LINE before you install windows, can't hurt. |

since you want me to be exact it isn't even command line
when booting of the xp cd to run the install it loads to ram a special 32 bit nonGUI simple OS that is able to complete the rest of the installation tasks :P |
