The Ming Finish - Where they "remove" orange peel - Click HERE for Original Thread

TrevorK
My buddy went to Ming, and they were telling him about this package they have where for like $400 they apply a chemical to his paint and it eliminates all the orange peel.

I'd love some more info on this - it's seems interesting.....

Anyone?

sounds like a load of bs to me

Exactly what I'm thinking - but they claim it works (And my buddy wants to try it - so I'll know forsure). I'm just curious how they do it - I thought the only way was wetsanding...

the orange peel look is from teh paint being so thin, its the metal thats like that, not the paint.

BS the metal is like that.

ogange peel is usally in the clear coat due to lots of variables.
the only way to get rid of it is to wetsand and polish the entire car. which usally would run ya about 6-8 hundred bucks.

stating my own findings.
as on my car the only part of the car where its like that are the two rear quarter panels, the only metal body panels....

if its something else.... well then that doesn make sence to me at all, but doesnt matter, jsut tell me what it is, not jsut BS.

Orange peel is from spraying the clear coat on. As for whether it occurs only on metal panels I could not tell you. But that doesn't make sense either because the clear adheres to the paint, not to the metal....

That's what I thought would be the only way to remove it as well (And figured a good job would run around 800 myself).

But I'd really like to know how they do it - as they're offering a warranty for 7 years as well. And Ming's been in business for awhile, so they obviously can't be ripping you off.....

BZZRTN
yeah ming has been around for years, but i would ask more about the chemical...i dont know what would do that.

i also dont understand a 7 yr warranty? if it removes orange peel it would remove it forever would it not? so a lifetime warranty would make more sence.....:dunno:

let me expand on my previous post. orange peel is typically caused be to thick of paint viscousity, to low of air pressure or standing to far away while painting and getting poor coverage. Ming has been around for ever and is good at making car look good. It is worth the money if its a used car you want to make look good and sell (this is there specially - kinda like maco). They basicly wax it and then put a coating on it. Looks good, but may break down over time and a huge pain in the ass is you ever plan on repainting the car.

The amount of orange peel you get is a function of the spraying technique and the quality of the prep work done. The only way I know of to get rid of it is like someone already said - lots of wetsanding.

This claim by Ming is at least partial BS. The best they could accomplish by chemical means is maybe HIDE the orange peel effect, but it wouldn't remove it and it wouldn't be permanent.

But regarding MING, I would never recommend that place. A few years ago I took my Prelude SR-V in for a dent repair, and the owner's son worked on my car. The idiot tried taking my headlight out ('cause he thought that was the better way to get at the fender), and was turning the alignment screw instead of the mounting screw, turned it too far and ended up busting my corner lamp. Then he denied that he did it afterwards.

ya i have a ming coating on my car the best thing ever

speaking from the perspective of some one who used paint for a living. Orange peel is cause by putting on too thick of a coat of paint at one time instead of layering it on properly. I have heard of using a diamond polisher that can minimize orange peel it apparenlty can buff scratches out too but have never personally seen it done before, I have seen plenty of vehicles with a ming finish and they tend to look great. If your buddy has the $$$ then I would say go for it
