Ecu?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

MeXx
ok some one help me. What is an ecu and what does it do like a stage 1 ecu , 2 or 3. Like what is the difference in stages and what does an ecu do????

The reason im asking is theres one for sale for my car and it claiming it gives 10 hp so???

These will adjust fuel maps/ignition timing etc through the computer. I'd be a little skeptical about 10hp, maybe 2 or 3. One thing to keep in mind is that your factory ECU is set up that way for a reason, altering it may change other things besides power, things that may lower your engines life.

When a lot of people saying "upgraded ECU" it can just mean a chip.

In which case, the power you would get would greatly vary - just look at what happens when you "chip" a diesel - torque galore. Or the 1.8T - those respond very well to a chip...

They key is to find out what type of chip, and what it does. Some may have undesired affects - increasing fuel pressure, etc... that you may not feel are worth the extra couple horsepower.

Chipping an N/A car tho, you will not see nearly those gains.. It depends how agressive the factory was when tuning your car.. Chipping my car will gain me 1-2HP if that.. prolly get better gains takin a shit before I race..

u must have alot of shit in you

im always fulla shit

anyways it was an exagerated example of how effective "chipping" your N/A car will be..

If anything, its the changed shift points that make you feel faster..

You can definitely get 10whp out of it. Most ECUs are on the safe side for reliability, and they run a richer AFR than needed. These chips will run it a bit leaner, but you better use premium gas then. It might not be as reliable as it was from factory though.

Keep in mind Eric, that 10hp is about a 7% increase in power for his car, that's not completely out of whack, but that would be the higher end of hp increases on a small displacement NA car. When you chip these turbo diesels it's telling the computer to add more boost and more fuel to get power from all the extra air. Sadly on a NA car you do not have the option of increasing air flow with the ECU.

MeXx, like it was mentioned before, buying an upgraded ECU for a car that is naturally aspired will not get you big gains... If you are looking for better times in the 1/4 mile there are many other things that are alot cheaper, and more efficient that you can do to achieve this goal.

I.E Launch Techniques, weight distribution, weight reduction, etc...

sometimes ppl get racing ecus that are specifically designed for crazy cam profiles and big injectors or whatever crazy mod.

another option u can look into are fuel computers, either piggy back or standalone. in corollas, ive seen ppl gain like 30hp using a self-tuning standalone. i also know that h22s are tuned like poo from the factory and that manhunters lude could probably get like 15hp if he went for a dyno tune session with some piggyback.

1-2hp gain is the worst case scenario, when u get a shitty chip that is designed for a racing application and u try to use it to run a stock engine.
