Man, those people who let their kids get that close to a pit bull should have their kids taken away. |

yeah that seems to be the general feeling about pit bulls.....
it's too bad they got such a bad rep when they're the exact opposite of what that rep is...:( |

I dunno man. That breed has been bred for centuries to fight and kill. Why would you bring that into a house with kids?? No mater what the rep is, it's a fact. |

| I think a dogs behavior has alot to do with its upbringing as well as the breed. You can have the mildest breed and have it abused and end up with a viscious dog. |

Awesome dogs.
Too much bad media when it comes to pitties.
It's the media's glorification of these sad incidents that give pitties a bad name.
Compare this to media coverage of when a golden retriever performs the same violent act. A Pit Bull will always get worse media.
No one wants to hear that a Golden Retreiver mauled some lady and pit bulls have such a bad rep already that the media plays on people's fears to sell more newspapers. The bastards.
Any dog can bite, especially if it has a history of abuse. To me it's all in the upbringing and breeding. It's suprising what the media/laws classify as a pit bull. Pit bulls can be animal agressive but in general are very loyal, and loving when it comes to family members. You'd be surprised to find how many small children are bitten by other "people friendly" dogs like golden retrievers and dalmations. |

what Clem said.....
I dont really like pit bulls...an appearance and other things but there are far WORSE dog breeds I would not own!!!
It's funny how you don't hear about all the German Shepard dog bites that happen in this city  .....they happen quite a lot, and they are allowed to  .....ok ok a bit of humor I am talking about the police dogs    .....just think what "normal" K9 teeth (not as in dog) can do....some of the police dogs have titanium K9's due to them wearing their normal teeth down  OUCH motha fooka

| I have been around dogs my whole life and can say from fact that it is all in how the dog is raised and trained. I have witnessed a teacup poodle attacking a baby because it was abused. If you train a dog to attack it will, if you get a pit bull and baby it and be all soft with it you'll end up with the biggest push over of a dog. The breeding that went into gettting the pit bull to be where it is at now had nothing to do with agrressive behaviour and everything to do with physical attributes such as locking jaws and bite pressure. I would in an instance take a pit bull (aka American Staffordshire Terrier) over a Doberman |

FYI, pitbulls were breed to DOG FIGHT ( meaning they were only allowed to fight dogs not HUMANS!)
a fighting dog that attacks his/her owner is a dead dog.
Tthere for you get none that will attack a human(fightin dogs) unless it was trained or provoked to attack a human(which is the owners fault not the dog) just like any other breed of dogs can |

great posts guys!!
glad to see there are people out there who aren't media-sheep!! :D
Just to tie in all the posts incase some people missed them:
1) Pitbulls were bred as fighting dogs, yes, but when they are in a fight the owners usually did not handle the dogs. They had separate "referees" handle the dogs before, during and after a fight. So that means, for the safety of the "referee" all pitbulls/fighting dogs could not be people aggressive even in the situation where the dog is severely wounded it would not bite/attack someone touching it. That is how pitbulls were bred, to be dog aggressive but not people aggressive, the nature of dog fighting mandates that.
2) Pitbulls do not have "locking" jaws. There are no dogs with such physiology, if there was a "dog" with a true "locking" jaw it would be classified as another species/sub-species. The only thing that makes pitbulls have such strong jaws is their determination (or "gameness"). It is the inner drive to never give up, so if a pitbull bites, it does not lock its jaw it simply just does not give up/let go. There ARE ways to break their bite, by using something called a "breaking stick" that goes behind the molars and in effect, pry's the dog's mouth open.
Looking at the shape & makeup of a pitbull's skull, one could also say that they have strong jaw muscles but that does not mean their jaws lock.
Clem posted up a really good link, should check it out if you're a disbeliever :) |

Rotties look mean too. My buddy's uncle has a full grown Rott that's the size of a small horse. That dog is a lot friendlier than some poodles and Collies I've met.
"Looks can be decieving" just doesn't apply to humans but everything. |

quote: The American Temperament Test Society continually ranks Pits better in temperamnet than many other breeds such as the Airedale Terrier, Basenji, Beagle, Bichon Frise, Border Collie, Chihuahua, Collie, Dachshund(4 of 6 varieties), English Setter, Lhasa Opso, Pomeranian, Shar-Pei, Shiba Inu, Shih Tzu, Schnauzer, and Toy Poodle all score below average and many more far below than that of the Pit Bull. Even though their temperament score is less than average many would not even think twice in their ownership as a family pet.
In a report from Dekalb County Georgia, the conclusion was reached that statistics could no be used to document the dangerousness of any one breed, or the comparison of one breed to another. The 5-year study of fatal attacks from 1975-1980 lists the German Shepherds first and "mixed breeds" second with the American Pit Bull Terrier listed 6th

As everyone has said, it's the way a dog is raised that often determines its behaviours and actions. Sadly you get many sick people buying dogs such as pitbulls and rotties that train them to be mean and vicious animals. I watched a special awhile ago on the dogs and there was one piece of video of an animal control person being attacked by a pitbull on the owners command. The dog had attacked someone else and he was going to be put down....in reality I think that owner should have been locked up because she used the dog as a weapon. Fucking sick people in this world!

P.S. Please don't attack the media, not all journalists are like this. Fear is often the easiest emotion to bring about in people and lazy people in the media pray on this. |

not attacking journalists, the people who choose what to show & how it's shown are the people who give the media a bad image |
