How come in Japan.... - Click HERE for Original Thread

In Japan they speak Japanese right? So why would all their cars have english writting on them? WTF?

VerbotenZ34
Because it's reverse Rice - they think having english words on the cars make them look cool :p

Why do the Honduhs here have Chinese grafitti all over them? Same reason.............

Japanese kids want anything western. For them, it's cool to wear our style clothes, eat McDonalds, listen to our music, and speak English. Learn-to-speak-English classes are jammed over there.

A friend of mine went over there to teach English. He said he was constantly swarmed by teenage girls, like he was a rock star or something. He was initially quite happy with the attention, but after 4 years, he couldn't take anymore of it (girls calling his house all hours of the day and night, and following him around), so he came home.

Yeah, but if you're in Japan you can't call it rice. Hmm.... maybe you could call it hamburger.

Japanese dude- "Look at that car! It's hamburgered to the nuts."

I think he's more referring to the badges on the cars being in english, as well as the gauges, etc. This is something I've kinda wondered myself.:dunno:

Thats exactly what I meant.

Huh?

TofuBoi
oh i'm comparing why japanese ppl like english writing on their car...... its like people in north america aquiring a right hand drive vehicle...... because its unique........ and its kinda cool

Yeah, but ALL the cars in Japan as far as I know have english writting on them. Like, Skyline and Supra.

ChromeDragon
All of their guages are in standard numbers etc. even though they have their own characters for these things. It just seems odd to me that's all. I'm guessing it's the American influence on the world, it doesn't matter where you go, these things typically stay consistent on vehicles.

as for the numerals in/on cars...the current numbering system used in Western society seems to be the standard across the world.

You'll be hardpressed to find clocks/speedos/etc listed in the native language's numerical system.

As for the english names on Japanese cars...maybe Japanese rice (or should it be called potato??) has climbed all the way to the top of the corporate ladder!!!

DomesticDrifter
its probably because its cheaper to produce all the gauged for thier cars with english characters. because most of their cars are exported to all 4 corners of the golbe it makes sense that they use the standard roman number system when making gauges. also most countries do use the roman alphabet so making gauges in characters specific for japan and making seperate gauges for the rest of the world would costly from a production stand point. thats probably why they use english, as for why its written on the cars, probably the same deal

Terry, we aren't talking about bathing suits here........c'mon!!! Damn grape smugglers!

This is one of the things I wondered in younger yrs... I sometimes assume they name the cars from the name of the god or legends in English (some other languages, too). But interestingly some of their motorcycles are named in Japanese. (such as Katana and Ninja)
