Those of you with engine swaps:
Did you get the car appraised with the new engine, and are all covered with your insurance company? I know the limit on engine modifications is a ~20% horsepower increase... after that you need an appraisal.
So what if you just turn the boost down during daily driving?
What did you guys do?

I had a professional appraisal done. I think the name was Sunburn Auto appraisals. He basically gives a book value of the car and then adds up all the receipts/mods and comes to a value. The car had to be insured under a special collectors/appraisal group.......just make sure you get the insurance policy with a 19a clause (you can get screwed in a claim with just the 19 clause). .. It is very important trust me. Talk to Mike at Plains insurance once you have the appraisal.

MOST insurance companies will NOT give you a 19A, only a 19.
19A is typically reserved for very special rare cars that are basically towed by flatbed from the dealership when they are new to a garage and has zero miles and never sees the light of day. You'd be hard pressed to find a normal legit insurance company that would give you a 19A on anything.
You'd be better off seeking "collector coverage" (w/ your appraisal in hand) under one of the few companies that specializes in that business. |

My insurance company covers all my modifications as long as I disclose them prior to. And yes, it's more than 20% HP (I think that's a myth - like the one I hear of anything over 500HP isn't street legal).....
Hell, the guy on the phone was talking to me about his modified Trans Am when I asked what was covered.... |

There's a chance if the engine was the cause of the accident (Going 200KM/H in a geo metro) that they'll void it.
But no, in general they will not void policies for engine modifications that are not the cause of the accident. |

umm just wondering what is clause 19 and 19a?
what is so important about 19a? |

Apparently the 19 clause is very similar to the 19a as they both claim to insure the vehicle for the appraised amount. However, the 19 allows the company to be flexible on the appraised amount and therefore you may not be covered for the FULL appraised amount. The company can rewrite the appraisal at claim time and say they think the value is slightly lower. The 19a holds the company to the appraised value to the cent. My appraisal is to the dollar and the insurance company cannot argue that value.
The 19 versus 19a sounded like BS to me but my appraiser explained it to me and I just made sure that I got 19a coverage. You pay more and it requires some searching, but it is worth it.

| My insurance company (Meloche Monnex) told me they will cover my car for what ever I put into it they will replace to exactly how I had it. |

Monex did the same for me when I had my crash back in the day. They gave me whatever I said was in the car.
Also, I had my car appraised after the swap, and my insurance only went up like $20 a month. |

How on earth did you manage that (without the rare scenario I described above)? The 19A is based on the premise of ZERO depreciation from the time of the appraisal. How can you do that with a Civic? EVERYTHING that is driven will depreciate a bit.
Not even Baker Insurance in Calgary, one of the few who specializes in collector car coverage, would give a 19A to just anybody. |

Well what can I say....I have the policy in my hand and it specifies 19a coverage. It took some looking and was a little pricy, but was worth the effort. I do have a stipulation that it must get re-appraised every two years and the book value depreciation would affect it.....but in the appraisal the actual car value was like $6500 anyways, so it can't go down too far!!!! |

I assume they are limiting the mileage you are allowed to drive, and possibly the places you are allowed to park it? |

The only limitation is the mileage that I go to and from work....but this is the same with any policy....the less you commute, the less your policy will be. However, they do not put mileage limits on a per year basis or stipulate anything to do with parking (I have never heard of a company that does that). The policy is the same as any other policy I have had in the past in terms of usage.
