Do you guys know if we have unmanned photo radar in the city here yet?

A friends cousin said they installed one on jasper somewhere

Where are all the locations?

SplineZ
unmaned photo radar is like redline cameras and stuff.. they have'em everywhere..

But are they in use, are they legal to use now?

SplineZ
sure, run a red light, get a ticket.. they have been in use for atleast 5 years..

as far as I know there was only 1 actually recording speed, and that was on 34th street and whitemud.. that was in 2002.

Was this the one thats right at the end of sherwood park as it goes outto the highway and it blinked "too fast" if you were going over 60?

If so, one time i was doing a job out there and i drove through it and it said too fast, so my reaction was to slow down, the next day i was like, it blinks "too fast" thats really funny, im going to get a hed start from the light before and get a head start, so i gunned it and i went through and it flashed....and my heart jsut dropped i thoguht i was going to get a massive ass ticket

sure enough,

I got a ticket from that one in 2001 that read "this is only a warning" you were travelling 161 in a 60 zone" hahahahaha
i laughed my bag off. and then thanked god!

hahahhahaha. Only a warning? You should bend over and kiss your ass you were so lucky.

TheNeonEdge
I know, and to this day, i have no idea why it was only a warning either, maybe it was just a detterant at the time?!?!

legislation doesnt alow this at the current time. thats why it was just a warning.

it only sends a warning for 30 over I believe it was.

this is almost as bad as hte rumour of the moving photoradar that went around this time last year.

yeah i got the same thing, i love that little "too fast" thing and i punched it, and i didnt even recognize the flash, and then like 3 weeks later in the mail...

Speed and intersections can be deadly...
this car was doing 105km/h in a 50km/h zone
This is just a warning, and does not require a response from you

i'm like THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Is it just me or is there something wrong with this? :loco:...

What about this new "radar" that the police are touting?...

Is it just a new vehicle that they are usinf for photo radar?.

SplineZ
nah, that "new" radar thing they're touting are a bunch of old ghost cars fitted with "driving mode" radar...

They can drive behind ya, blip the radar, and tag ya for however fast your going using that setup..

radar detector = useless in this situation cuz its not always on.. unless your picking him up picking someone else up :)

Well as far as I know it's still illegal to have unmanned photo radar. Red Light cams are different, when they refer to photo radar they are talking about camera's that would issue speeding tickets.

Last year they did a number of experiments in the city, they set up photo radar w/ redlight cams.

Their goal was to track the number of people that speed up to run reds, and they hoped that would bolster their case to have unmaned speed traps. So even though the camera's were catching people. they couldn't legally fine you.

Basically what they said at the time was "The numbers will speak for themselves" well apparently they didn't!

yea i live right by that ''too fast' blinkie thing in the park. it still blinks now but they dont send out warnings anymore. i got a ticket a while ago...120$ for doin 84 in a 60. pain in the ass i tell ya!

oh yea and i also did see an unmanned forest green van sittin on the baseline freeway going west about a click outta the park 2 days ago. so it IS out there.

rexxrally
They're still sending out warnings only. I got one at that same Sherwood Park intersection for doing 85 in a 60 on April 6th, 2004. So, they're giving notices out for 25 over.

It also says:

"Monitoring at the intersection of Wye and Ordze in Sherwood Park showed that 41% of motorists exceeded the speed limit during a one week period."

Well, aren't they supposed to follow the 85% or 90% rule in setting speed limits (ie, 85 or 90% compliance)? 41% of people speeding means the speed limit is way too low.

Besides, what do they HONESTLY think people are going to be doing when they are heading out onto the Sherwood Park Freeway (speed limit 100)? You do 60 through there, and you'll get rammed from behind, or else people will be swerving around you, giving you the finger.

I remember that they have that red light camera at yellowhead and 107st, they had it doing double duty. It was a red light camera and it was counting how many people were speeding. I think it was some crazy number like 80 to 90% were speeding to make the light. I think this helped in not letting westbound traffic turn left there anymore. The fact that there was an accident there every other day didn't help either. I'm not one of those poeple that want photo radar on every corner but, if you dont want to get a ticket don't speed pretty easy if you ask me.

PraxRX7
yea photo radar on every corner haha kiss my butt!

I dont speed either, but I dont like the idea of photo radar on every corner, I mean come on! It takes my car just a split second from 60 kph to 70 kph if I am shoulder checking, I don't want a speeding ticket for having to speed up to pass some idiot either...

Raise highway limits to 140 KPH and raise everything else 20 kph and go ahead and put photo on every corner but you wont catch to many people speeding. (Ever try to stop for a red light and notice that the idiot behind you is flooring it, so if you don't floor it your gonna crushed? (semi's, SUV's and Trucks in particular, which always tend to follow to close! (semis dont follow to close though usually).

Meh, I still say photo radar is a violation of our rights. (I havent gotten a photo radar ticket in the mail yet!, still this is my view!).

If people are speeding its cause the city planners are stupid and should not have built residential areas right around busy roads.
