How many of you work on your own car? - Click HERE for Original Thread

JeffZ28
It seems like none (or very few) acutally install stuff on your own.

I personally do everything that I can, short of welding I'l be doing everything.

bigmack000
i do as much as i can but with the lack of tools i get my stuff doen at shops like my rebuild and stuff. but i try and do most of my own work. i am goin to be installing my new breaks, coil over all that kinda lil stuff my self and i am also doin my own autobody kinda :). i love working on my car. gets me off my ass and away from my comp lol.

rx7turboracer
i try to do as much as i can to expense always getting it done

VerbotenZ34
I do everything I can, as well, although sometimes even PartSource doesn't have the right tool for rent.

Verboten

energie
I try to do as much as i can but usually i don't have the right tools and i'm not patient with stuff so i hardly do installs myself

TrevorK
The only time I've evern paid someone is when I didn't have the time to do it....

Other than that, nope.

Nightstalker
With the help of some friends, I have done everything that is done to my car.

the BLACK
yep, done everything except motor mounts for my car, don't have an engine stand/ jack that would fit under the engine where i wanted it to. really, all you need is a repair handbook if you're not sure. although, all computer/electrical/ programming shit, i wouldn't even think of touching it.

SplineZ
i dont like dipping into the inside of my engine or transmission, but everything else I can/will do myself..

I will however have a professional paint my car after ive done prepping it :)

Our (my father and I) tool collection is pretty good, and getting better all the time. We can usually justify purchasing new tools, even if they are pretty specialised. Almost always because they have a second non-apprent use..

We just got an air compressor, and he's using it for dusting the house :P ahah

not gonna lie, i will attempt to do things myself, but i do not have any tools...lol and i hardly know what i'm doing:p :p

04_WRX_STi
I work on my own stuff.

Shane

SilverZ24
I do everything I can for the most part.

I installed my supercharger and many other mods, but this past weekend I went to Apex to have my clutch and flywheel replaced because they are a bitch on these cars and ever difficult without a vehicle lift. So for things like that I take my car in. :)

Flex
With the space and tools I have at home I try to do what I can. Anything really major I have done though.

Sloth
I do everything my self, but I really need a lift in my garage. I was spoiled working at a dealership for a couple of years.

scooby_dooby
Well like 2 years ago i'd never worked on a car in my life, once i got the teg i started learning.

Since then i've done:

- Valve lash adjustment
- Removed Intake Resonator
- Installed CAI
- Oil Change
- Changed Brake Pads
- Removed shocks and installed Lowering Springs (bitch!)
- Installed new header
- Painted valve cover
- Installed Stereo/DVD Player/Amps etc...
- Installed Adjustable cam gears(fuct this up, had to bring it in)
- Installed 92-93 Bumper
- Painted Calipers

pretty good for someone who didn't know what a header was 2 years ago. the cool thing about everything is that once you do it it's allways pretty easy stuff. Pullin wrenches basically, I'm tryin to get the balls to do a tranny swap...but i dunno

Snowcrash
I'll bring my car in for exhaust work because I hate doing it! I do most thins though. If I get a turbo put on my car I'll bring it to pro-drag. I don't have a milling machine or plasma cutter to cut the header flange anyway.

Neo-Blue99GASE
For me, its usually just easier to get someone else to do it. That said, most mods ive done myself, including my speaker install, interior lights, re-mounting my underbodies, installing my CAI. Besides that, well I usually leave it to those who know what they are doing.

scooby_dooby
it's all about bonding, once you pop off that valve cover and star t workin on the internals for the first time, you feel that much closer to your baby.

or.....maybe I'm just wierd!

POX
dont have the time or skills :(

WHat tool did partsource not have. Just a question b/c i work there and maybe we can get it in for next time
Jason

JeffZ28
One tool I really need is a torque wrench, and crappy tire has a nice one on sale for 75 bucks....

and htey have the 109 piece maximum socket set on sale for 115.

But ya one thing about working on your own, is that you can get the better parts, or jsut more of htem.

Verboten

rx7turboracer
hmmmm never heard that before what does that do lol

SplineZ

Xpnsve
I do everything I can do in my buddies garage but I live downtown in a hi-rise so it's kinda hard haha

VerbotenZ34
......Sammoflange!
WTF is a Sammoflange?

Verboten;)

rx7turboracer
hahahaha lol good one:lol:

Mekanik22
I do everything myself. I have an air compressor, air tools like impact gun, air ratchet, etc, I have all the tools a mechanic could ever need combined with my stepdad's. I have pry bars, torque wrench, Jack and jack stands. I have enough to do all my jobs I need to do on my car.

stealth
I do ALL of the work on my car. Everything was tried/done by me.

When my resonator broke, i tried to fix it:rolleyes: then took it to get done professioanly

when the rad went, i got screwwed over and had them to install it when i could of done it on my own...

all other shit i do on my own, like cv boots, brake work, suspension, but atleast i did the cv once and will never do it again, its a learning process, and i dont wanna do it again.

Neo-Blue99GASE
Ok, so if we ever need tools, lets go to mekanik's palce and use his! hehe JJ man. Id also have to agree with you splinez, the more you add to your car, the more it feels like a part of you

DeathBy240
I'm doing my engine swap myself expect for the wiring as I don't wanna spend months trying to figure out where I fucked it all up.

REFLUX
I have my work professionally done.

I don't have the tools, the time nor the patience to do work on my car. Maybe one day when I have more of one of the above :)

Plus, I rather have it done once, have it done right, and not to have any headaches or worries over what was done.

Also, if something does go wrong, most shops try to right the wrong and fix the job :)

Nice thing about doing your own work, you don't have to take it back to the shop. Of course Murphy's Law states "Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. At the worst possible moment."

Nis240
I have done everything so far on my car except for the timing chain because its a 12 hour job but anything else like shocks, springs, clutch, rebuilding tranny, and some electrical projects. It help to save money on install that you could put toward better parts.

IDiOM
I lowered my truck... With the help of a few friends. ;)

You picked a hell of a car to start on!! :D

But you'll soon discover that Z32 ownership sorta forces you to become your own mechanic.

ChromeDragon
Ummm I do....:dunno:

Nightstalker
For all of you that seem to think that you might break something by working on your car. If you spend the time to research what you are doing before hand, and have a good understanding of what is required before hand you shouldn't be worried about messing something up. You engine is for the most part just a whole bunch of bolts holding things together in a set order. As long as you have the right tools and don't rush things its not really that difficult. That said there are a coupe things I don't plan on doing my self these being paint, and the programing of my hondata system which I can't do anyway but I wana stay as far away from the fuel managment as I can. That way some one else is liable when it blows up.

Skillz
I have done everything to my car with the help of a few friends. This includes full suspension swap, RB20 swap into S13, all te wiring, new R32 gauge cluster, FMIC, installing e-manage and profec-E01, 2-way LSD, turbo-back exhaust, and lots of other stuff.

Other work I have done includes a myriad of spring/shock swaps, full bushing replacement (Biggest pain in the ass yet), Ingalls camber kit on a CRX (Almost as big of a pain in the ass), exhausts of all shapes and sizes, countless water pumps, timing belts, cams, etc.

Im not ASE certified, nor do I claim to be a master mechanic, but as someone before put it, a repair manual will get you through most anything out there.
