A few questions for the Nissan 240 guys - Click HERE for Original Thread

Mekanik22
Is it true that a 95 Infinity J30 LSD will fit in a S13? If so, how common is it and are they hard to find?

Secondly, on an SR20DET cylinder head, what are common mods that could be done to go along with a rebuilt bottom end (like new rods, pistons, etc)? Can I just build onto the stock head or would it be more wise to just get a new head?

Thirdly, if your going with new pistons and rods, how can you make your crankshaft perform nicely with these mods? Like do you just re-balance the old SR20 crankshaft or would you just suggest getting a new one?

Lastly, this is the question I want to know most. They say if you don't upgrade your fuel system and you only upgrade your turbo system it can lead to detenation. So I'm just wondering what would you upgrade, what would you upgrade it to, and why? Would you suggest upgrading any other system (Besides cooling, I know that already)?

Thanks guys.

Big fuel pump, fuel rail, fuel regulator, and big injectors (size depends on how big a turbo you want to go), some sort of engine management system for the car to comprehend all that. You won't just get detonation, but your engine WILL detonate if you know what i mean. Kaboom.

First off, noice choice on the car.

I thought all Canadian S13's had a VLSD? (if ur not Canadian, sorry, I just assumed)
As for the J30 VLSD, yes it will bolt in, and no its not too hard. The only really pain in the ass about it is determining if the new ouput shafts will bolt on to the axles in the rear. Nissan has two patterns, a 5-bolt star and a six-bolt triangle (look kinda like 3-spoke Advan wheels :) ). Now, Ive personally seen VLSD cars come with both, so see which ones you have, and buy those. New ones will cost you about 300 american, which offsets the lo-cost VLSD choice in the first place, IMO.

Both the stock head and crank shaft are fine. The head is proven, and the crank is forged from the factory, and strong. Id recommend getting the whole engine balanced, though, if you want to be safer.

As for the SR20 head, there is always port/polish, angled valve jobs, titanium parts, and the like. Id go with a rocker arm stopper (the SR has floating lifters, and they can let go after 7000 rpms), a good 3-angle valve job, get the valves nitrated, and port and polish. Thats if yuou have the money of course :) . Also buy head studs from ARP (link below).

Get the rocker arm stopper for sure though, its cheap and could save your motor.

In the bottom end, use ARP (www.arp-bolts.com) con rod studs and main studs. The SR crank has a tendancy to walk, which would break a con rod and kill your block. Its a $200-american solution to that. Also, make for dayyyyyummm sure the rings are gapped properly, cuz if its not turning up the boost will cause mad leak down, which is t3h 5ux.

SRBURG13 gave good info about the fuel stuff. Its pretty much a full fuel system replacement, which sux, I know, but its worth it. And its also only worth doing once. I know those used eGay injectors look tempting, but youll end up wanting more later, so go for broke. The fuel pump and fuel pressure reg. are a must. Dont get one without the other, though. An air flow converter, like the GReddy E-manage or the APEXi S-AFCII will work fine if you dont want to worry about timing, ignition and the like. i know that both will handle up to 600 injectors, so thats good. I personally use the E-manage because it links with the Profec E-01 boost controller and is very user friendly, and can be used to tune all that other stuff i mentioned before, for about the same price as most other AFC/BC combos.

A wideband O2 sensor, an exhaust-gas temperature gauge and an Air-Fuel gauge will tell you if your running lean, which will lead to detonation. Or just dyno it and get a AF map done.

I hope this helps

DISCLAIMER: I am not an SR guru, so do your own research.
DISCLAIMER2: All this info applies to USDM s13's and the JDM SR, I know nothing about Canadian stuff.

How can you tell if it has it?Other than the Tire test:p

The VLSD has a bunch of cooling fins on the diff cover, and usually a big orange sticker that says, you guessed it, VLSD.
