I sent in my resume and CL for a vacant position over at Brewster Holidays (http://www.brewster.ca) just for the heck of it 2 weeks ago. This company is located right in Banff.
Suprisingly, I received a call a few minutes ago from one of their personnels (HR I believed?). She asked me a few question and I asked her some too about the job description, expectations, company's profile, etc. I told her that I need some time until tomorrow to think about this before proceeding with allocating an interview time slot for me next week.
I've always thought about getting a job in Banff or Canmore because of the unbeatable scenery, crisp fresh air, and proximity to the mountains and wilderness. Never did I realize that this opportunity would suddenly come knocking on my door.
Seeing that I still live at home with my parents and have never moved out before, what are things to consider, especially moving to Banff?
Renting/housing cost is obviously #1 on the list. I don't know anyone personally in Banff or Canmore so I'd have to rent an apartment.
What would each of you do? |

| I would at least go down for the interview.Housing will more than likely be quite expensive. The thing about those places is that you have to be really active outdoors.I have a couple of friends that lived in Jasper and all they really did is work and get drunk. Not a whole lot to do if you arent interested in outdoor sports. But I would definatly check things out.It might be a job you would love.If you do go good luck:bthumbup: |

Your whole lifestyle will change - you think it's not a hassle to drive back to the city to see your friends, but just wait until you have to do it.
I've passed up on a job in Hinton for that very reason - too much here in the city that I'd end up losing (No matter how strong my intentions were).
Doesn't hurt to go for the interview, then at least you tried. But really give it some thought, it's not something to be done on a whim (I assume this is a career oriented job?). |

Go for it. Banff/Canmore is a nice area. Make sure you have enough cash for a resort pass though!
If I had an oppertunity to move down there I definitly would. I'd just need about 1500 bux to convert my sled to a long track! |

| I just went through this a month ago. I checked out a job in Whistler. Rented a car, lived with a cousin for a week and worked while I was there. No better way to get job experience (if your not sure), especially if your thinking of moving there for it. I say go check it out, you'll regret it if you dont. And dont quit your curretn job yet. If banff sees your willing to move there for them. They can wait for a 2 week notice, If your like that. |

I have decided to go in for the interview. I called the lady a few minutes ago and it'll be one week from today :) She asked me if I was sure and that I didn't sound too positive/enthusiastic when she talked to me last nite. I told her again that it is a big step and that perhaps in the interview, it will shed some more light on the company profile itself and what the job will be.

I'm well aware of the housing cost in Canmore or Banff. Obviously I gotta factor in that vs what their offer would be, and if there is any relocation or housing allowance.

I do like the outdoors so that should be good.

My sister did that for a few months when she was working down in Calgary. Yeah, I could see that she was getting sick of driving back and forth. It was only for the summer though.

Yup, it's a career, IT, server/network administration. 5 years experience under my belt. Lady told me I'll be the team lead, which is what I've been looking for.

I have the annual national parks pass :)

If I do know someone in Canmore or Banff and if I can't crash in with them, hell yeah, I'd relocate there in a flash (assuming money is good).

Lady asked me how long would need to relocate, quit my current job, etc. I told her 4 weeks at the minimum. She was fine with it. |

yeah, what about your gf? what does she say about all this?
...and about the home relocation allowance? You have to add that to your benefits on top of your salary...so u end up paying taxes on it anyways! I think you'd be better off just paying for the move yourself and being able to deduct all of your expenses from your taxes.
In any case, u have a bunch of friends for cow town, which is only 30min away (in the S ;)) |

Well, I'm sure she can find something related to what she studied at school...

I'm not too sure how that works. I guess I'll find out more. |
