First time using 20w50, initial impressions - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
So for the past 2 or so years I've been using 10w30/40 in the engine.

Through winter storage (~ -30C) to high summer's heat on a race track (~ +30C) it's always been 10w30 and it seemed to hold up well.

But after trying to run 2 race days, 1 autox & ~1000 daily driven miles on the same 5qts of oil, it seemed to break down, get consumed rather quickly & get mightily BLACK. After a bit of searching & reading, I decided to give Castrol GTX 20w50 a shot.

WOW, is the engine EVER smooth! With 10w30, pushing it in 1st would result in some engine/cabin shakage (shake) from ~5k-redline (7k) but with the 20w50...smooth all the way through.
In fact, it feels slower. But maybe it just feels slower and is really faster (autox/race track theory, slower is faster).

The lowest temps we're reaching right now are ~1C and after sitting for over an hour, it still started up just fine, no hassle or prolonged anything.

I will keep a close eye on the changes but until then, so far...20w50 is the better oil for my engine.

I used to run 20W50 in my small block. That shits like molases. Good stuff if you drive the hell out of your ride.

REFLUX
ok after sitting for an entire night & 1/2 a day, I started up my car this afternoon and when it went through it's 3k rpm start up...it sounded pretty bad.

Maybe it's because the oil is so thick it takes a little while to circulate through but the engine sounded terrible, wasn't smooth sounding at all.

So I tapped the throttle to cancel the warm up sequence and it sounded pretty normal at 2k rpm.

It was ~15C when I started her up, was sitting in the sun the whole day.

Maybe it just needs to get circulating but will there be any problems with such a strange start up

I bypass the 3000k starup every time

running an engine at 3000 rpms when its been sitting just doesnt seem right to me...I am happy with my 10w40 but the 20w50 is probably better for the internals, although I think the 10w40 is better on the oil injection/metering pump...

I think i think...meh...

yeah it's funny the logic some people use to negate the lubing qualities of 10w40
they say that because it covers such an extreme range, too many chemicals & additives are used
but 20w50 is better because it covers a smaller (or more select?) range

they're both separated by "30" no?
or maybe it's temperature range they're talkking about
which makes more sense

:dunno:

Hi all I have been using 15w40 in my 1st gen RX7 it seems to work great at least it works great in my old worn out 12a and no problems starting down to -10 .
