Here I am reading a bunch of consumer reports that say a 1991 Nissan 240SX in good condition is worth $2000 give or take a few hundred and all the bone stock 1989s I see are being sold for over $3500. Why is that? What's making the prices jump like that?

240s are pretty popular right now,
also, those consumer book/reports seem to quote under on many occasions |

consumer books base prices on original price minus 10% depreciation per year. They also believe that kilometers on a vehicle has anything to do with vehicle quality.
On an original car, with original engine, and normal service, then yes the consumer books hold true.
However, with e rebuilt engine, new paint job, drivetrain work done (clutch etc) even at 500,000 kms a vehicle could be worth $9000.
Consumer books are crap. However, the price of a anything is only determined by what some idiot will pay for it.
Ever wonder why flat screen TV's are so expensive? Because there are to many idiots with to much money willing to pay top dollar...if less people bought at that price, the prices will do down. Same holds true for cars, except with cars you can see receipts for work done etc.
A good 240sx that has been taken care of can be worth anywhere from $2000-$5000 respectivly. |

As well, the consumer book is made down east where used vehicles have a lower value.
Check the AutoTrader in Toronto - I bet you'll find 240's for dirt cheap there. |

Because you can see right through the rocker panels. |

No doubt. The older cars from Ontario tend to be rusted to shit, unless they are really taken care of. IMO 240's will continue to keep a high value thanks to the increasing interest in 'drifting' and such. |

value also depends on the season your buying in, and whos selling it.
i mean, buy a 240 from a dude whos big into sports cars in late spring, your paying out the ass.
buy the same car from a ditzy lil blonde cheerleader who thinks its "just a car" in the middle of winter... you get the idea.
DONT buy bikes, quads, sports cars or boats in the spring/summer unless you wanna pay tooooo much. :) |

if you think 240sx are over prices you should check out CRX,Mr2, Or prelude prices in the summer. Or Pretty much anything sporty thats from the late 80's early 90's.
Sporty cars get a lot more expensive in the summer.
Another thing to consider is people are asking those prices but are the cars selling at those prices. |

Exactly. And what do you do when you want to sell your used car? You look at the bargain finder or trader and price your car according to others listed. This will make high prices across the board. |

I always knock a grand or two off the price someone's trying to get. ... Thats the real price they usually settle at.
My car was listed at $5500 in the bargain finder... I offered $4300 and settled on $4500
A bit overpriced IMO my baby is only worth $4000 but she has new paint, new windshield, new headlights, not a trace of Rust and straight from B.C.
She was taken care of, thats why I paid a bit extra |

Same reason I bought mine.
Paid $7700 for mine, new engine, new paint, new clutch, new tires. Looking good. (listed $9500 on auto trader)
And just from meeting the guy I knew it had been well taken care of.

value of a car is what the market drives it to be
something is worth as much as someone will pay.
my car is book value of 13000, but I could sell it for 20 extremely easy. |

| acura is sickly overpriced, and IMO the quality isnt even there enough to warrent the high prices, this can mostly bee seen on integras. |
