| Help!! Need To Learn To Reformat!!! - Click HERE for Original Thread |

| Ok my computer is messed. I should consider myself very lucky to even be able to successfully run WinXP. I ran a virus scan from TrendMicro and fixed some things they traced, but couldn't clean some viruses on their list. I suspect some other ppl in my family clicked some attachments unleashed hell on my pc (it messed my IE, printers, lots of popups and some major system files that i think are vital). Since I don't want to pay to get this thing reformatted I want to learn how to do it from scratch. I heard it's not hard but not too many of my friends have the time to sit down and tell me what to do. Does anyone have a site that teaches you how to do this step by step? Please offer any input guys I really need to clean this mess. Thanks |

Do you have the winXP cd and can your system boot from CD?If yes, then basically you can boot from the cd,may have to change the startup order in the bios, then boot up,setup will run,and you can pretty much follow the steps and do the re-install.

did your machine come from a manufacturer like HP, compaq or the like?
or was it built from parts
if it is from a big manufacturer it should of come with some form of recvovery program
also you may want to make sure that you have a drivers disk for anything that may not be found by the install program |

nope it was built from parts, it's not like from a shady place, it's pretty well established from Honor Computer Systems. I looked through the box they gave me and everything seemed to be there...cd drivers, OS System disc etc. I was hoping i'd learn from someone or somewhere how to reformat the comp in my situation. But even if mine were from a major distributor, wouldn't a major virus or crash affect the recovery program itself? |

No you dont have to. When you boot from teh CD it will ask u where to install windows, like which drive. from there you can choose whether to reformat or not.
So basically pop in the cd, choose the options to format and install the OS and your done :)
Just make sure u change hte boot sequence in your bios so that CD boots before the HD. Oh and stay by yourcomputer when u boot by the CD, cuz u have to press a button to confirm to boot from CD. |

| more then likely your bios is accessed by either the F1 or Del key. Just look when you turn it on it will have a message on the screen that will say "hit (whatever key it is) to enter set up" |
