We'll, looks like I need to replace the valve cover gasket on the mazda.
How hard is it to DIY? Any special concerns or things that could go wrong if I did myself?
I'm guessing that you remove the bolts, remove valve cover, remove old gasket (making sure that none gets in the engine), clean surfaces, install new gasket, re-install valve cover, torque nuts, done! |

That's how easy it is on most cars - since the mazda is a 4 banger, it should be right in front of you.
Just make sure to get a rubber gasket as they are a lot nicer (Don't need RTV or anything - and they last a long time).
Remember - when torqueing the nuts go diagonally
1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8
For example, torque 2 then 7, 3 then 6, 4 then 5, 1 then 8. Your manual will give you an exact order. Make sure to only torque to specified specs so you don't crack the valve cover (Some valve covers are made of a soft metal). |

| With my integra I learned not to over tighten the valve cover other wise you are going to fuck it up and the nut just spins and wont come off. Other than that its pretty basic, those valve cover bolts are like 15 bucks so dont over tighten them |

ya should be a snap, on the integra it's maybe a 12minute job.
use the smallest ratchet you have, and stop when it feels tight, you really really don't want to strip a bolt, and using a little ratchet gives you a lot lkess torque and it's alot easier to not strip.
or you could just get a torque wrench
as for tightening in sequence i don't worry about that, it's just a valvecover it's not like you're gonna warp your head or anything, i'm always taking mine on and off, and no leaks or anything, |
