What causes Engines to get louder. - Click HERE for Original Thread

DC5PWR
I was wondering what are some of the things that make engines louder over time... (besides mods btw).. Timing, etc...

And how can this be tuned..;)

REFLUX
mmm...what are you trying to get at?

the easiest & more cost-efficient way to get your engine to be louder is to push harder on the accelerator

as for the "louder over time" bit...I would assume wear & tear would make it louder but not significantly, not unless something is broken.

are you saying "louder over time" as in a natural process or "louder over time" as you begin to tinker more & more with the engine?

DC5PWR
basically just when the car is idling...

Like when you first buy a car brand new, you can barely even tell if its running or not...

2003specv
"enlarged exhaust outlets"

LOL!!!!

TrevorK
On older cars if you notice your car slowly getting louder it could be as simple as an exhaust gasket or hole in the exhaust.

There are different types of loud though - are you referring to exhaust? Valvetrain noise?

snugs
....so you want your engine to make more noise? That's easy.

-Remove all intake snorkles or silencers.
-Remove the air filter.
-Remove the hood blanket.
-Replace all belts with rusty barbed wire.
-Loosen the bolts on the head.
-Loosen the bolts on your header.
-Beat on the engine with a large steel bar.

Then :fingersx: and start her up.

REFLUX
ahhh ok
so you're wondering what makes a car idle more loudly and how you can get it tuned/adjusted to idle more quietly?

I would think a normal tune-up could help but engine noise should increase with age & useage
of course if "usage" is "abuse"...then nit's going to get louder more quickly and tune-ups should be done more frequently
same goes for oil changes & other general maintenance

try running a thicker oil (or better brand), I know when I switched from 10w30 to 20w50 the engine was much smoother & quieter (once it warmed up that is, thick oil doesn't move so well when cold)

Motul seems to be a popular brand amongst you Honda guys and a few have reported similar effects as I have with my 20w50.

Also, look into putting in some good tranny fluid, I'm not too familiar with tranny noise at idle, I would think there would be none but something should be spinning when it's in neutral, could be that too? :dunno:

i'm not sure what design your cat-back is, but some mufflers 'break in' over time.

dogstar
yes, some mufflers get much louder once they bed down and break in.

exhaust gaskets can be a problem, and yes, something as simple as oil makes a difference.

reflux, one thing you might want to do is use a 10w50 or 15w50 (harder to find) synthetic.
when cold its nice and thin and flows well, but retains its viscosity under heat and load.

DC5PWR, describe what kind of noise your talking about, and we can probably tell you more about the problem
oh, and i couldnt tell, but do you want more noise, or less.

cause if you want a nice loud car, get some 2" straight pipe installed, remove the catalytic converter and use a dynomax muffler.... youll get cops staring at you for blocks...
they must really like my car :) they follow me, just looking at it!

oh my god.

wouldn't more aggressive camshafts make your idle louder?

SplineZ
you've probly removed alot of the air baffles, and silencers outta your intake/exhaust... more air in/out, the more noise will be made..

also as things wear, tolerences get more and more.. they'll make more noise..

I'm thinking it's due to the fact that mufflers can build up crap in them and reduce their ability to dampen the noise.

Personally, I use Mobil1 15w50 in my car, then engine is nice and quiet but the real noise comes from the exhaust I'm running on my car :(

scooby_dooby
most of the noisy ass old engines i hear sound like they just need a valve adjustment, i think as a car gets older peole tend to stop getting valve adjustments done and they're engine gets louder and sounds like shit.

and the pulley's in the engine get old i suppose, start to squeak, your motor mounts might deteriorate and the engine might vibrate more at idle.

could be leaks or rust holes in the exhaust piping, lots of things

MrMullet
I know on my "Red Dragon" that it got real loud when my muffler fell off.

SplineZ
doing a lil tuning on the carb there? give her a lil more power? gooo frank :D
