If you're trying to show off muscle car excess use of spoilers, how can you leave out the Superbird?

haha.. joe dirt..
apparently those wings actually stabilized the rear at speeds in which the car traveled on the oval they used to race on..
looks like a rack you'd use to hang clothing on tho :)

In the words of Joe Dirt, "Life's a garden, dig it!"
Actor Paul Newman actually raced a Datsun 510 and a modified 280 ZX turbo back in the day. |

The only reason the spoiler is so high on the Superbird/Daytona Charger is because they mounted it on the fenders, and thats' the only way the trunk would be able to open without hitting the wing. It clears it by less than an inch. You'll notice that very soon after, all the spoilers around were mounted on the trunks and had an overhang.
Yep, they were just learning about aerodynamics, so stuck a pointed nose, front lip spoiler, that rear abomination, and even to ducts on the front fenders to draw the air out of the wheelwells, which was causing a lot of turbulence before hand. Officially, they claimed it was to cool the brakes or some bs like that, because they didn't want Ford and GM to know about the advantage. (sp?)
I think the Daytonas were ugly as hell, but they were groundbreaking machines.
(no, I didn't cut and past any of this stuff, before someone calls bs) |

| That's a really sweet looking Thunderbird coupe, I have always liked that 80s aero T-Bird. What kind of horses are you getting from the turbo 2.3? :) |

Thanks Darth. :) Power is pretty mild. maybe 200hp right now. And that's judging from the stock 190 + 2 1/2" duals + k&n drop in=200, hopefully. Torque was 240 stock, so chances are if these mods have allowed it to breathe 10 more hp then, 10 ft/lbs isn't a stretch. I'd like to dyno the thing, but chances are I won't bother until I build the other lump for it first. Same with 1/4 mile.
Is there an afordable place to have it dyno tested in Edmonton? |

I cant believe you guys are laughing at those muscle cars when some people are doing stuff like this TODAY!

I personally dont mind the spoilers on the 70-81 F Body's, I own an 81. Sure the spoiler is alittle over dramatic but nothing worse than some of the stuff you see on the road everyday... |

While this is true.. most of the people pointing and snickering dont have large spoilers or spoilers at all....

I don't think we are making fun of those cars as such, just looking back at extravagant times. That 2nd gen RX7 with the homemade rear spoiler wasn't my cup of tea, from memory didn't those cars come with just a small rear black spoiler around the glass hatch?
Credit where credit is due, the wings/spoilers on the 1970-81 Trans Am & Z/28 were well integrated with the car's actual body shape, they didn't have the mounted on look of some cars.
190-200 net for the 2.3 turbo 4 cyl wasn't bad for those days, from what I can remember the 5.0 V8 was making the same power, and that was alot of horses back in the mid to late 80s. |
