Well I'm not sure what exactly it was but something on the intake side of my engine popped yesterday. I'm getting a massive hissing noise and I haven't yet found where it is.
Here's the short story. Driving home, accelerated through first and second pretty quickly, backed off in third. I stepped on the gas in third and noticed the car only spooling to 7psi and it wouldn't go past. As I roll up to the next corner to turn the car stalls. I restart it while I'm still rolling and now I hear this leak. I was only a few blocks from home so I kept going. Once home the car manages to idle for me(very erratically) and I take a look under the hood.
I was not able to feel where the leak is, and since the engine was idling, I'd assume it was pulling air in from somewhere it shouldn't and causing the erratic idle. I can't physically locate the leak by sound because it's so freaking loud it can be heard all over the engine bay. I'm hoping that it is just the up pipe from the turbo of something, but it sounded like it could have been coming from the intake runners.
Any ideas?:dunno: |

You can't always see intake/vacuum leaks.
You can use a mechanic's stethoscope to listen for the leak, or the old fashioned way of using Carb Cleaner (Or WD40, or anything that'll make the engine surge) to spray on potential leaks. |

Trace your IC piping starting from your air filter all the way to the turbo, then to the intake manifold.
What you want to look for is any hose couplers that are split, cracked worn, or may have popped off.
*Look carefully* that includes getting on top of motor and visually inspected the back of the hoses that you normally wouldn't see.
Trace the vacuum lines from your intake and make sure nothing is loose or hanging.
I'm thinking it may be a vacuum line off your wastegate if it is only spooling to 7PSI. I'm under the belief that is running off the stock wastegate spring and with no reference line/lines going to the wastegate, it just pops open when the exhaust pressure overcomes the spring.
There might be something else that may have happened due to this because no single fault caused would give you this many problems. Perhaps one hose popped off and took a few others with it?
If you need some help Matt, pm me and we'll hook up.
Good luck and happy hunting :) |

| The car does not have an IC...... I'm stumped?! WTF. |

Are you sure it's the intake side?
It could be the exhaust side too, check the manifold bolts/turbo manifold. (It would be louder, non-hissing noise though).
Do you have aftermarket BOV? You might have to do a vacum test on the turbo side (should be easy as you don't have an IC??).
Basically, block it off, hook up a pump and try to build manual pressure. (There's a good writeup on dsmforums.com but all those cars have IC's).
Hmm, what kind of intake do you have? I've seen cheapo cone ones actually come apart. They make a wierd whistling noise then.
More info needed :) (What kind of car, 300Z right?, aftermarket stuff?) |

Well it's not the BOV, and it's not exhaust. I've heard exhaust leaks many times before, this is definitely not exhaust, but it is something new. I've heard intake leaks before, maybe this is so much louder because it's near the turbo itself? I'll pull the up pipe and see what the connections look like. Maybe this is just a result of the boost leak I was already having?

P.S. Andy, you're more than welcome to come help me out tonight if you like! |

Well it turns out that it was just the plug for the factory boost guage that came loose. I hadn't felt around the intake because the car had been hot when it happened, but once I started poking around the intake on the cool engine I found it. I have no idea where the plug went, but it's not a big problem.
Thanks guys. |
