I went in with the intention of looking at the two American N/A's they had advertised in the Autotrader for some time. I had absolutely no intentions to buy the cars, but, being an MR2 enthusiast, I wanted to see what was available.
After going around the lot and not seeing the cars, I went inside and decided to ask about them. I talked to a young salesman who provided me with his car (he'll remain unnamed :)), also, an older gentleman was standing with him when I inquired about the cars.
I was told the following:
The cars were imported from the states originally as turbo's. I know that this is probably untrue, as one of the cars was advertised as an automatic. He then continued on to tell me the importer (who was somehow a part of the dealership - used car salesmanager maybe ??) decided that he didn't like turbo'd engines and decided the 2.2L was better. I could never get out of him what happened to the original engines. I was told that each car sold for over fourteen grand, which I also have a hard time believing, since Daewoo just sold one of those very nice 91 turbo's for about $16.5K.
I don't want to say that I was lied to, but I have a hard time believing all I was told. I've been a Toyota Product Advisor in the past, and when people blow smoke out of their ass to someone who knows what they're talking about, it really bothers me.
Basically, the point of this post is to rant as well as to warn people that a dealer may say things that aren't true to make a sale. Tread lightly in your hometown ! |

Great thread, Adam.
I just wished more people would do their homework before purchasing ANY used car.
Have a competent mechanic check the car out, run a CARFAX, do a lien/ loan search, explore other insurance companies in your area to see if they have a history. Take the VIN to the TOYOTA dealer as you would be surprised as to what they may be able to tell you.
Do not buy blindly. This will cause more future heartache and anguish. |

It's Satan, what do you expect?
Lies are the accepted way to do business I guess.
And 15-18K for NON-Turbo MR2's. Please. PLEASE.
And they sold them both to some tools, man. Some people. The problem is people that buy from dealerships at inflated prices. Don't people KNOW? |
