hmm I was in my buddys corolla gts and this weird sound just started?
like a ticking sound from the engine?
The oil is fine and everything!
does this mean the engine is going to die soon?this is bad news for him he just bought it too.... |

What kind of gas in in there? is it old gas? could it be detonation?
Is it quiet or loud? could it be a spun rod bearing? a misaligned valve?
Is it engine speed related?
Is there a noticable loss in performance |

| Could be just run of the mill valve train noise. |
|
|
| RSN CRX |
| It could be an exhaust leak from the gasket of the headers. |

thats my guess too... unless your experience any kinda of loss of power, or seeing nasty looking smoke... good just be wear and tear. Yer car's not new you know :P |

| no loss of power or no black smoke. |

| How long since he's changed the oil? Or does he rev the piss out of it? It could be the sound of valve lifters, they tend to do that under those 2 circumstances... |

oil's pretty clean.
is this valve lifters exspensive to change? |
|

| It's not the parts that get you, it's the labor. Lifters are like $40 or something like that. Maybe cheaper. But you'll only pay parts if you do it yourself. If you go to a shop, they'll charge like $70-$80 an hour to change. I'm not exactly sure on the specified time though. |

| Time for some 15w40 oil. |
|
|
| Mekanik22 |
| Yeah, that'll work too. But it's a thicker oil. |
|

| WTF?! I just re-read this post and noticed somebody said 15W40 oil?!?! That's diesel engine oil  That isn't for you man. You need 10W30 at the most. I must have been tired when I replied cause I never read that grade of oil properly. Don't put that in your engine. It causes sludge build up and fun stuff like that. |

| Really? I use 15W50 in my car, luckily, I haven't had any of this sludge build up... |
|

| I run 20W50, I must have nothing but sludge build up. |

Yeah, "supposedly" they ran tests, but I haven't seen results. I've just been told my many different people who acually run oil grade like that daily. |

If its a ticking sound and you can only mostly hear it at idle or if you listen closely on the road it gets less noticable you might have a hole in your exhaust pipe or muffler maybe a pin- penhead size.
I had this happen on my trans am, kinda a stupid thing to get from bottoming out.
So if he recently bottomed out or scraped a curb, he may have made a small hole in his muffler or something, just get out and listen and try to find where it is coming from. Could also be a loose part rattling in the engine bay?!

| i had the same problem, and i was pretty sure it was one of my lifters...just drove the car a little harder..took her to red a little more often and just had to wear it in a little bit...plus i did change my oil over to 15W40 synthetic and now she purrs perfectly |

| I run 15w50 in the civic.. but that was because it burns oil.. or it did before I started using 15w50.. I am still hoping the leak is related to my bad head gaskets.. we will see I guess.. |
