mini accident.. paint chipped - Click HERE for Original Thread

DrunkenGoddess
question: is it true that paint chips left unattended to, will lead to rust?

95IntegraRS
In most cases, yes. Put some primer on it.

DrunkenGoddess
is that the touch-up paint you get from the dealer? and oh yea.. isn't that even uglier and due to bad paint skills.. going to lead to more damage in long run??

95IntegraRS
Not likely. Sand it and blend the paint with the touch-up. Then resand by wet-sanding and polish her up with a buffer and more wet-sanding, and she should look like new ;)

DrunkenGoddess
are you foreal? i dunno how to do that stuff! but if it's so easy, how come all the shops insist they need to paint the whole panel? i thought spot painting was supposed to be impossible?

Altezza
nah its ez buy the touch up paint find the code for the paint its usually on the drivers door or in the trunk if you dont know what # to look for ask some one buy the touch up paint and ask some one to do it for ya for like a lunch or what ever its ez job i fixed a bunch of paint chips on the front of my car

Paint/Clear Coat fades over time, and the touchup paint you get will be of your factory colour at the time it came from the factory.

So when you touchup 10 year old paint, or even 5 year old paint, it doesn't always look the same since one part is faded and one is not.

I've seen brand new cars that had bumpers repainted that didn't match the rest of the car.....

DrunkenGoddess
oh yea.. i've seen those too.. they look pretty lousy
so you think touch up paint will be my best bet? i'm scared it'll look really trashy.. like.. tacky.. blotchy.. you know what i mean right?

newtuner
Whats the smallest amount of paint a paint shop will custom mix for somebody? If you can get it matched that might look better. I have never gotten paint mixed for me so this could be a really expensive way to fix it. What do you guys think?

BZZRTN
i love all the paint pros:D ;)

you will always tell its there unless you redo the pannel.
because you know where it was.....however it is true if you wet sand it and touch it in it will look better...not great but better....however it should have clear on top ...not canadain tire clear either:p . but even then but touching it in it will have a haze of overspray from the new clear so you have to polish it after it dries to remove the excess... keep in mind it may still be off as paint can vary depending on anything from temp. to # of coats to diffrent prep so the color will not always be 100 % match...
good luck:cool:

BZZRTN
i do touch up bottles....pm if needed

DrunkenGoddess
this is a joke right? how can one little scratch.. (alright, several) take so much effort and time?? how much you think they'll charge to do what you suggested? (the sanding and touchup paint.. not redoing panel)

your asking people that are anal about their cars how to fix something small.
What kind of answer do you expect?

If you dont care, take the dealer toutch up bottle and get hard at it on a clean surface.

If you do care and dont want to spend lots and learn a little, read this thread again.

If you want it to look GREAT take it and have it painted, this cost will depend on where you take it, 100 to 1000 depending where and how bad the scratch is.

most shops wont really do the fill and wetsand fix. but if they do it would be 80-100 bucks I would think.

dogstar
ive found a lot of smaller "old dude with a spraygun" type shops will fix scratches/dings vs. the chain shops who will refuse to do anything except spray the whole panel.

maybe there are some decent independent shops in your area who can put in the effort to help you.

DrunkenGoddess
thanx.. i'm hoping for the same thing.. been asking around.. i don't know who's trustworthy or not.
like my dad's car was hit and the shop who fixed it up did such a messed up paintjob that the paint's now bubbling and cracking off :(

I've seen a 2002 BMW that went to a shop for some body work, and 4 month later chunks of Bondo started falling off.

Needless to say - the moral is you have to find someone good. But if you need a panel resprayed it will cost $$$ - the paint alone runs the guy 75-100, plus any decent paint guy charges quite a bit an hour.

Try the touch up paint, see how you like it. If you don't, you lost $10 and have to get it professionally done.

my aunts 330 got keyed and we tock it in to the local markham bmw dealership, its taking 3 days and like 2gs to just do one door :dunno:. But she doesnt care cause here companys paying for it :D

DrunkenGoddess
markham sounds nearby.. hahaha.. a fellow non-edmonton citizen? :D

does she even know why she got keyed?

oh yea, touch up paint.. do i go to the dealership? i've seen some at canadian tire.. dulpli-colour or something like that? i heard that's a good brand?

If it's just small spots, I'd use the brush/pen (Since it sounds like you've never done this before).

If your car is 5 years or older, I'd just goto CT (As there is no use wasting $$$ on a 95 Neon or something because of the value of the car) and grab their touchup paint.

How big of an area are we talking about? You didn't run into a post and want to touch that up?

Im out here working for the summer, but im from edmonton.

We were are the silver city in richmond hill on young street and there was no reason to the keying, probly kids trying to look rough

DrunkenGoddess
you're right.. it would definitely be my first time.
and also right.. i backed into a pole when trying to park  there are several white scratches in the rear.. it's like.. not.. THAT big.. :p
'97 neon and i just spent $1300 at the shop yesterday.. sigh.. poor car's getting old. :(

POX: i've seen a BMW get keyed before because it stole some guy's spot. don't you just hate that? you wait for so long and finally, a guy leaves but some freak pulls in from no where and just takes it like he's cool. hmph. that'll show em! i remember.. a bunch of young chicks.. grrrrr.. dumb bnitches!! ........ ahem.. :D

POX
opss pice was wrong its only $700 =/
thats why i am lost at why she got keyed cause it was an open spot and she didn do anything mean while driving ..
her car is also black so the keying was standing out big time

DrunkenGoddess
maybe they mistaked the car to be someone else's.. or maybe they were simply jealous that she's got the car and they don't! doesn't insurance cover that by any chance? those full coverages?

POX
her company payed for it =)

im thinking jellous people acculy now.. cause there not many kids around young and hwy 7
