I want to hack up my coils and I was wondering about the relationship of coil hack to actual drop achieved. The truck is an 83 B2000. Dig?

Not only in cutting your springs dangerous and unsafe, it is something most people would probably advise against.
Cuts springs can bottom out your suspension, induce bump steer, and cause premature wear of your shocks.
You should prbably save your money and get it done right, you'll probably end up with fewer problems. Dig?. |

How is it unsafe? And I can't buy lowering springs for this damn truck or I would have. A hack job is my only option. I figure a couple coils off the top and I'm good to go. I ain't called slammed B for nuthin. :)

First and foremost, cutting springs is ghetto.
Secondly, unless you are planning on buying a shock that has a shorter shaft to handle the higher spring rate, you may run into problems there. Also, people will make fun of you as you drive around bouncing all over the place.
Lowering springs cant be much more than a couple hundred bucks, just buy a set... |

So what you're saying is if I cut my coils my truck will be slammed but people will laugh at it...ah well. If you can show me lowering springs for my truck I will buy them. It's an 83 and most parts are made for the 86-93 generation B2000's. I'm doing a temporary static lower until I have my air bag set-up bought and paid for. I can't stand it being high.

Thats what I was thinking, as my Nissan P/U was the same way... lower the torsion bars and get those blocks and longer bolts for your leaf springs. (I have no idea what they are actually called.) |

I'd say be paitient and try not to look at your truck until you get a full airbag suspension done properly.
I'm no suspension specialist so this advice is flying by the seat of my pants.
With chopped springs, your stock shock pistons will be hammering into the top (or bottom depending on how you look at it) because the spring has not the length nor the strength.
ie: your shock is rated to "a" specs with "aa" spring rates and length. I you cut your springs now they are "c" length and a half assed "a.5" spring rate. So now you want to run the "ca.5" spring on an "a" rated shock, not good.
You will "pogo" down the street each time you hit a bump and have bump induced steer because your suspension is no longer balanced. Quite possibly damaging something else.
I'd say grin and bear it for now, patience has many rewards. |
