ball joint removal (shortage of tools) - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well I had no trouble breaking it from the strut, and taking the snap ring off, but I don't have a C-Clamp to push it out of the lower control arm. I also don't have any kind of a ball joint tool. I tried spraying WD-40 and stuff on there and POUNDING the shit out of it. Like I hammered on that thing full force for long periods of time, but it's not moving. So do you have any alternate suggestions on how to get that damn ball joint out? Thanks.

Most shops will have a press, and can press it out for you. In fact, CT can do it for you.

Princess Auto also sells an awesome kit I've used on ball joints...

Or you can use their loan a tool program (I'd assume that tool is in stock). Personally, I'd find a shop, give them $40, have them press the old ones out and the new ones in.

Either way - I would not sit there hammering it. Use the right tools, or you risk breaking/warping something.

Go buy yourself a pickle fork. Like Trevor said, Princess Auto or The Northern Shop have some handy kits. Don't do what I did. UAP-rapeya charged me $80 for a pickle fork set.

you can jack he hub/rotor assembly up and wedge a wrench in between the lca and where the ball joint sits in the knuckle. then lower the jack and step on the rotor and the wrench will pop out breaking the ball joint free. i have a vid on my comp that shows the procedure

I'd really advise against this - and advise using the right tools - especially when they're most likely free from CT/Part Source

If you've moved the crown bolt, and cotter pins; You might not even need a pickle fork..

Push in on the disk break, as hard as possible, and apply some pressure to the LCA... sometimes the balljoints have a groove in them that get caught on the lip of the thing they sit in..

Rent the right tools from crappy tire. That's what I did.

I've got a pickle fork. However it isn't an effective tool for breaking the ball joint away from the strut. I was sitting there today for a good 20 mins. hammering on that thing as hard as I could and there are no signs of it breaking loose. I tried a big bar against the frame and prying down of the control arm, but that didn't work either. Anyways, I found out my dad's friend had a ball joint press so I got that for free and I have one side done with the new joint and everything. It's the driver's side that is being a bitch, it just won't break loose. I'll go out again tommorow I suppose. Thanks for the replies.

Well it's a 1989 Nissan 240SX. As far as working out, my max bench is 200 lbs. and I go 2-3 times a week, so I'm positive it's not me :)
